Just last night, I was able to be in the room as both of our tennis teams learned their selections for the NCAA Championship this year. I could not be prouder of Coach Daryl Greenan and his ladies for making their fourth-straight tourney appearance after the program only totaled four in its history before our ladies' current run. They head to Chapel Hill to face William and Mary in the first round on May 11. With multiple ranked wins already under their belt – including an upset of Vanderbilt (the No. 1 national seed in the NCAAs) - back in March, I know this team is more than prepared for what the postseason will present to them and I look forward to cheering them on.
After that announcement, our men's team did no less than claim the No. 6 overall national seed and earn the right to host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament in Starkville May 11-12. I will repeat myself many times on this over the next 10 days but,. right now, I want to issue a challenge to you: let's pack the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre next weekend to support this amazing team. One of my favorite things about Mississippi State fans is our dedication to supporting all sports on campus. That's why we've seen record crowds at every sport from football and softball to women's basketball and soccer over the last few years. With our help, we can ensure that next weekend will be just the beginning of a very enjoyable postseason ride for our men's tennis team. You can purchase tickets for the weekend now at www.hailstate.com/tickets and find complete information at www.hailstate.com/ncaatennis.
Congratulations again to everyone involved in these programs. We can't wait to watch your seasons continue.
Meanwhile, our softball team has a very important series this weekend against Tennessee, a three-game homestand at Nusz Park to end the regular season ahead of SEC and NCAA Tournament play. There aren't many schedules in the country more difficult than the one Coach Stuedeman and her team have navigated, and yet they sit at 34-18 overall, including a 23-8 home record, a Top 25 ranking and a Top 20 RPI.
As they make their final push before the postseason, let's show them our support in games on Friday at 6:30, Saturday at 1 and Sunday at 1.
At the prestigious Penn Relays over the weekend, Coach Dudley and our track and field teams had their best performance in our school's history of competing in the event. We won two Championships of America and won a third relay wheel in only two days, an incredibly impressive performance. Our men's 4x800m relay team shattered an 11-year-old record by over six seconds, our javelin group finished the season with a sixth-straight event winner in only six meets, and Rhianwedd Price-Weimer finished as the top collegiate runner in the Olympic Mile.
Congratulations to those young men and women on a great regular season as they prepare for the SEC Championships next week.
Yesterday, we announced the full schedule of events for the annual Road Dawgs Tour, and we are thrilled to be visiting 10 different cities in a total of five different states this year. You can find the full schedule here and I hope you'll join us at a stop near you with the tour beginning next week. I know we are all looking forward to hearing from Coach Moorhead and he is excited to be a part of every visit this year.
We appreciate what you do for Mississippi State Athletics and want to encourage you to get others involved. There are three things you can do to help the athletic department at Mississippi State reach its desired goals:
1. Buy Season Tickets
2. Financially Support the Bulldog Club
3. Get Others To Do The Same
Thanks for taking the time to read this update.
Hail State!
