STARKVILLE, Miss. — Looking to bolster its already impressive front court while also adding depth, Mississippi State signed Jethro Tshisumpa (Ta-shum-pa) on Wednesday.
The 6-foot-10, 260-pound forward played at San Jacinto College this past year after spending his freshman campaign at Arizona State.
In his one year with the Ravens, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Lubumbashi) native started 28 of the 31 games he played and averaged 8.4 points and 6.5 rebounds. His 116 blocked shots were third overall in the NJCAA.
"I am thrilled to have Jethro joining the Bulldog family," said MSU coach Ben Howland, who guided the Bulldogs to a 25-12 ledger this past season and berth to the NIT Final Four. "He is a very athletic, strong and physical post player who plays very hard and is also an outstanding student and young man.
"We are very fortunate to have him join the program. I look forward to getting him here and working with him starting this June."
Tshisumpa, who prepped at Mountain Mission High School in Virginia, scored in double digits 11 times while at SJC and recorded four double-doubles. His season-high of 15 points came against Paris Junior College, while his best rebounding effort was 14 against Coastal Bend College.
He also had a career-high 10 blocked shots against Tyler Junior College.
Out of high school, the four-star standout was an ESPN Top 100 player who signed with Arizona State.
"I feel like it's a good fit for me, especially about the way I play," Tshisumpa said. "It's like a perfect match. I'm excited, and I'm pumped. I'm excited about the success they've had, and I'm looking forward to being a part of that success next year."
He appeared in 26 games for the Sun Devils and drew five starts. He totaled 55 rebounds, 25 points and 25 blocked shots as a freshman. His season-high 5 points came against Washington, while season-best 5 rebounds came at UCLA. Against San Diego State, he had 5 blocked shots.
