As the season goes along, please remember that we're still only a little over halfway through the full build, so while the New Dude is our home field, it is also a construction site. Until the 2019 season when everything will be complete, I thank you for your patience and understanding during this transition phase. The finished product will be more than worth the wait, and already I believe the New Dude will have the best atmosphere in the country without even being done yet.
You've got plenty of opportunities to come check out the stadium and watch the team during our current home stretch, starting tonight at 6:30 against New Mexico State University with general admission tickets available at the gate for only two dollars. We also play a series against Utah Valley State this weekend with games at 6:30 Friday, 1 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
One of the things we talk about constantly at Mississippi State is competing for championships. This weekend, we will be doing just that as Coach Dudley and five of our track and field athletes will be at the Indoor National Championships in College Station running and jumping for titles. With three women and two men at the meet, the Bulldogs will be represented well and we look forward to seeing them compete at the highest level before transitioning to the outdoor season. Good luck to Rhian Price-Weimer, Logan Boss and Tiffany Flynn on the women's side, and to Marco Arop and Dejon Devroe who will both be making their first appearance at Nationals on the men's side.
With a 7-1 record and coming off a dominant 6-1 win over Auburn to start SEC play, Coach Matt Roberts and our 27th-ranked men's tennis team have two more big conference matchups at home this weekend as we host No. 9 Florida on Friday afternoon at 3 and then welcome No. 28 South Carolina to town on Sunday at 1. In addition to the usual activities, the team is giving away crawfish as long as it lasts for Friday's match against UF.
I know how impactful big crowds can be in college tennis, and I also know how much our players love playing in front of their fans, so let's pack the Pitts Tennis Centre out this weekend as we cheer on a team deserving of support. Admission is free to all and I look forward to seeing you there!
Having moved up to No. 23 in the country on the heels of a four-game win streak, Coach Stuedeman and our softball Bulldogs have made quite an impressive start to the season. In the middle of a nine-game homestand now as the non-conference schedule wraps up, you've got plenty of opportunities to come check out one of the hottest teams on campus.
We play five games this week, starting this afternoon at 4 against Boston College. At Nusz Park this weekend, the team takes on Illinois on Friday at 6, Illinois again at 1:30 on Saturday, and then UMass-Lowell twice, once on Saturday at 4 and again on Sunday at 1:30. Make sure you find time to come out to the park and see your Bulldogs in action, or follow along online with all five games streaming on SEC Network+.
And finally, we wish good luck to Coach Howland and our men's basketball team in the SEC Tournament in St. Louis this week, starting tomorrow night against LSU at 6 on SEC Network. With several possibilities still alive for our team, we look forward to seeing our Bulldogs back in the postseason this year and we will update you immediately as soon as our destination is decided, with ticket information included.
Additionally, I was incredibly proud this week to attend the C-Spire Gillom and Howell Award ceremonies with five of the six finalists being Bulldogs. All of the nominees were deserving, and we couldn't be happier for Quinndary Weatherspoon for winning his first Howell Trophy and for Victoria Vivians on winning her fourth-straight Gillom Trophy, a clean sweep for her collegiate career.
Finally, we will be holding an NCAA Women's Basketball selection show party early next week. Be on the lookout for full details!
We appreciate what you do for Mississippi State Athletics and want to encourage you to get others involved. There are three things you can do to help the athletic department at Mississippi State reach its desired goals:
1. Buy Season Tickets
2. Financially Support the Bulldog Club
3. Get Others To Do The Same
Thanks for taking the time to read this update.
Hail State!
