March 30, 2018 | Softball
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – With the game locked at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Arkansas (26-6, 3-4 SEC) knocked a walk-off double to top Mississippi State (28-7, 3-4 SEC), 3-2, Friday night at Bogle Park.
Senior Morgan Bell led MSU at the plate going 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Bell was one of three Bulldogs to record a hit in Friday's series opened.
In the circle, senior Holly Ward (10-3) retired the first eight batters she faced in a strong performance on the road. Ward tossed 6.1 innings allowed three runs off eight hits and one walk. Ward struck out three in the outing.
Razorback starter Mary Haff appeared to strikeout the side, but an illegal pitch on the third strike of junior Sarai Niu's at bat keep the Bulldogs alive. Niu would draw go on to draw a two-out walk before Bell capitalized with her sixth home run of the season to put MSU up early with a 2-0 lead.
Ward would retire eight straight before Arkansas got its first base runner of the game with help of a State error. The Bulldogs worked around the error to retire the side, but the Razorbacks would break through in the fourth with their first hits of the game.
Arkansas led off the fourth with a single to left and a double down the left field line to put two Razorbacks in scoring position with no outs. A Katie Warrick sacrifice fly to right and a Loren Krzysko RBI single locked the game up at 2-2. Arkansas looked primed to take the lead in the inning with still two runners on base with just one out, but the Bulldogs turned two with outs at home and third to retire the side with the scored locked.
Ward and Haff would trade two scoreless innings to take a tied game to the seventh inning.
Senior Calyn Adams led off the top of the seventh with a walk, but Haff would retire the next three batters she faced to keep Adams stranded. The Razorbacks responded with a one-out single and double to put two runners into scoring position, forcing the Bulldogs to bring senior Cassady Knudsen out of the bullpen. On the first pitch of her at bat, Autumn Buczek doubled to right to cap a run-rule victory for Arkansas.
