Faith is a big part of who senior infielder Jessica "Reggie" Harrison is, and she is allowing it to guide her throughout her last season.
Reggie's faith has grown a great deal since the passing of her father Stephen and with the help of her teammates from the University of Arkansas, where she began her collegiate career before transferring to Mississippi State, and her Bulldog family in Starkville. State opened a different arena for Reggie as a fresh start and "a breath of fresh air."'
Through her grieving process, Reggie helped teammate Calyn Adams through her own grief when Adams' mother passed shortly after Reggie's arrival in Starkville. Although Reggie, who lost her mother Carrie at the age of nine, was there to help Adams, she feels that Adams helped her more than she did in return by talking it out.
"Everybody believes in different things," Reggie said. "I do believe that, eventually, I will see my parents again. I feel like they've seen every game since."
The time Reggie had with her parents was impactful. Growing up, Reggie always had a ball in her hand. From knocking things over with her whiffle bat at her great grandmother's or getting her first tooth knocked out playing catch with her father, sports were a major part of Reggie's life.
She participated in various sports such as AAU basketball, travel swimming and softball. Her father told her that she had to pick one. Reggie's choice was easy. She decided to play softball because her mother played softball.
"She never had the grades to go to college and play," Reggie said. "That was one of her biggest regrets. I was going to have the grades good enough to go."
While growing up, Reggie was not allowed to do anything if her grades didn't make the cut. So before touching the field, Reggie makes it a priority to get her school work done first. It has surely paid off.
When she is not on the field hitting doubles, she is hitting the books as a double major in business administration and finance. When she's not at practice, this entrepreneur is in the finance lab, working on investments or even watching the stock or coin markets.
"It's kind of nerdy, but I really do enjoy finance," Reggie said.
When it is time for Reggie to take a break from finance, she heads to the softball field to be with her teammates as a time for to step back, relieve stress and to have fun.
If someone on the team was to come in after a rough day, they could count on Kat Moore's outgoing personality to put a smile on their face, or even count on the tender love and care of head coach Vann Stuedeman to put them in a VANNtastic mood.
"Coach definitely cares about every one of her players," Reggie said. "My transfer year, she reached out and said 'You know you have a place to go for Thanksgiving.' That was really heartwarming."
Soon Reggie will be making her last lap around the bases of Nusz Park to walk across the stage as an SEC graduate in May. Reggie has the ambition to use her degree to operate her own business or work as a financial advisor. Reggie's goal is to finish strong.
Reggie Harrison and the 2018 senior class will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday, May 6 versus Tennessee at 2 p.m. CT.
