HILTON HEAD, S.C. – If a strong start is what Mississippi State was aiming for, then mission accomplish.

Athena Yang and Ela Grimwood tied for 16^th after the first round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on Friday, propelling the Mississippi State women's golf team to a tie for fifth with an 8-over 292.

MSU is tied with No. 9-ranked Furman and just two strokes behind No. 3 Arkansas for third.

Yang opened the round with three-straight pars and a birdie on the fourth. She finished her first nine holes even before going 1-over on the final nine.

"I focused on what I wanted to execute mentally and physically," Yang said. "I felt really relaxed, and I think that's what makes your round on this kind of golf course. I think we executed well as a team, and I look forward to (Saturday)."

Ela Grimwood started off her day with a bogey, but quickly got the shot back with a birdie on her second hole. She added two more in the opening round ending the day 1-over.

Katie Holt and Aubree Jones tied for 32^nd after firing 74's. Holt shot 3-over on the front nine, but collected three birdies to finish the back nine even. Jones tallied back-to-back birdies on Nos. 18 and 1 and again on No. 6 ending her day 3-over.

Blair Stockett fired an 81 Friday.

The Bulldogs are back in action in Hilton Head for the second round Saturday and will conclude play on Sunday.
