Mia Davidson Earns Second SEC Freshman of the Week Honor

STARKVILLE, Miss. – After going hitless in four straight contests, freshman Mia Davidson broke out of her slump in a massive way over the weekend to earn her second Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week honor of the season, the league announced Tuesday.
Davidson is the first freshman Bulldog to be honored with the award twice in a season since pitching ace Alexis Silkwood earned the laurel twice over the 2014 season.
The honor comes after the Hillsborough, N.C. native knocked eight hits, six of which went for extra bases, over No. 21 Mississippi State's undefeated week that featured wins over Boston College, Illinois and UMass Lowell. With a team-leading three doubles and three home runs, Davidson held a staggering 1.429 slugging percentage over State's five-game slate.
Davidson, the only freshman on the squad to start all 24 games this season, earned three starts behind the plate and two at third base. The slugger went 8-for-14 at the plate for a .571 average. She scored a team-leading nine runs and also tallied eight RBIs.
The weekend saw Davidson tie her career high of three RBIs over Illinois on March 9 as she went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run. In Sunday's finale versus UMass Lowell (March 11), Davidson was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, tying her career high for hits in a single game. Davidson scored two runs and recorded two RBIs against the Riverhawks.
Entering the fifth week of the season, Davidson is the only Bulldog to have recorded 20 or more hits, runs scored and RBIs this season. She leads the entire SEC with eight home runs and averages a conference-leading 0.33 home runs per game. Davidson also ranks third in the league with eight doubles this season. Her .920 season slugging percentage is the fourth-highest among all SEC hitters.
Mississippi State's undefeated weekend extended the Bulldog win streak to nine consecutive games, which ties for the 10th-longest win streak in program history. Coming in at No. 21, the Bulldogs (21-3) earned their highest ranking in the NFCA/USA Today Coaches Poll since 2008. Mississippi State also jumped one spot to No. 20 in the espn.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25, marking the first time since 2015 that the Bulldogs have been ranked in both major polls.
Davidson and the Bulldogs return to action tonight in Birmingham, Ala., against Samford. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. CT and will be streamed on the SoCon Digital Network.
