Coach Howland and our men kick it off tonight at 8 against Nebraska in the first round of the NIT, and I can't say enough how proud I am of these young men and how happy I am to see them back in the postseason. Games with something on the line are the kind that MSU basketball belongs in and they have worked incredibly hard to get here. If you haven't yet purchased tickets, they are still available at www.hailstate.com/tickets and can also be purchased on site at the ticket office in The Hump.
This weekend will mark the third-straight year that Coach Schaefer and our women's team will host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, and for the first time in program history, the Bulldogs are a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Already, tickets for the weekend are sold-out, a fact that speaks to how dedicated our fans are and how much excitement there is around this team. I can't wait to get the postseason underway and I am thrilled to have MSU so well-represented. First-round action begins Saturday with Syracuse and Oklahoma State at 2:30 p.m. Then, your SEC Champion Bulldogs take on Nicholls at 5 p.m. in their NCAA opener.
To our Bulldogs on the coast, I hope you'll stop by MGM Park tonight in Biloxi to cheer on Coach Henderson and the Diamond Dawgs as they take on Southeastern Louisiana at 6:30 in another exciting mid-week game. After that, the boys are back in town this weekend to open SEC play with a three-game series against Vanderbilt.
Of note, we have moved up Saturday's start time to 1 p.m. so that you can catch the baseball game before walking next door to watch the women's basketball game. Friday's game starts at 6:30 and Sunday's at 1 p.m., so make sure and come out to cheer on a team that's fresh off a series victory last weekend and is 7-1 in its last eight games.
Coach Stuedeman and the ladies of our softball team are nearing the conclusion of what has been an incredibly impressive performance in their non-conference schedule against some of the toughest competition from coast to coast. As a reward for their efforts and success, our Bulldogs are up to No. 21 in the country, their highest ranking since 2008 and one they have very much earned on the field.
After a convincing win at Samford last night, they travel to Memphis tonight at 6, our final game before SEC play begins this weekend at Missouri.
Next door to Nusz Park, our tennis teams are on a roll, too. Coach Roberts and our men's team have cracked the Top 15 in the country after starting SEC play at 3-0, taking down No. 28 South Carolina 4-1 this past Sunday after a big 5-2 upset of No. 9 Florida last Friday. These guys get better every day and we wish them luck at Alabama this Friday!
Meanwhile, Coach Greenan and his ladies are fresh off an exciting 4-3 win at Alabama this past Saturday and are back in town this weekend for two more important conference matches. Make plans to join us at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre on Thursday at 3 p.m. as we take on No. 2 Vanderbilt, then again on Saturday at noon as we welcome No. 14 Kentucky to town.
We appreciate what you do for Mississippi State Athletics and want to encourage you to get others involved. There are three things you can do to help the athletic department at Mississippi State reach its desired goals:
1. Buy Season Tickets
2. Financially Support the Bulldog Club
3. Get Others To Do The Same
Thanks for taking the time to read this update.
Hail State!
