Bulldog Softball Earns Highest Ranking in NFCA Coaches Poll Since 2008

STARKVILLE, Miss. – In the midst of a nine-game win streak, Mississippi State softball (21-3) earned jumped into the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Poll for the first time this season, earning its highest ranking in the poll in over a decade.
Coming in at No. 21, the Bulldogs are enjoying its first ranking in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll since March 6, 2015. The ranking is also the highest in the poll for MSU since earning the No. 18 spot on March 11, 2008.
State also jumped three spots to No. 20 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25, marking the first time since 2015 that the Bulldogs have been ranked in both major softball polls. Eleven of the 13 teams in the Southeastern Conference are now ranked.
Mississippi State wrapped up its final weekend of non-conference play last week, hosting Illinois and UMass Lowell at Nusz Park. The Bulldogs walked four wins, including three via the run-rule, and outscored their opponents 41 to 7.
The Bulldogs were led by freshman Mia Davidson at the plate as she picked up her second SEC Freshman of the Week honor. She's became the first Bulldog since Alexis Silkwood in 2014 to win Freshman of the Week multiple times over their debut season. Davidson went 8-for-14 (.571) at the plate with three doubles and three home runs for a 1.429 slugging percentage. She scored nine runs and tallied eight RBIs. Davidson now leads the entire SEC with eight home runs.
Mississippi State's pitching staff continues its dominating play in the circle, recording its 10th shutout of the season. The Bulldogs hold an 0.94 earned run average this season, which ranks fourth in the conference and seventh nationally.
The Bulldogs return to action tonight with a midweek contest in Birmingham, Ala., against Samford. First pitch from the Bulldog Softball Complex is set for 6 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed via the SoCon Digital Network.
