MSU Women’s Golf Travels To South Carolina For Darius Rucker Intercollegiate
March 01, 2018 | Women's Golf
STARKVILLE, Miss. – In the midst of a four-day skid that features two tournaments, the Mississippi State women's golf team looks to finish out the third event of the spring season in Hilton Head for the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.
The University of South Carolina hosted event is set to be played at the legendary Long Cove Club on March 2-4. The Bulldogs are familiar with this course, as they have participated in the event the past three seasons.
"The South Carolina hosted, Darius Rucker Intercollegiate is a Top 5 event in the country, said head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm. "It is one of the longest courses we play, but while we are young, a few of the girls played the course last year, and we look forward to teeing it up there. We will focus on the task at hand, not looking forward or back, and be world class problem solvers. As you know if you are a golfer, there is no perfect round of golf."
Athena Yang led the Bulldogs in the first of the two tournaments this week, finishing tied for sixth in The Dickson Invite with a 1-under 71. She will lead the starting five headed into Friday's first round of the Darius Rucker, while Katie Holt, Blair Stockett, Ela Grimwood, and Aubree Jones round out the rest of the lineup.
The field is said to be one of the toughest in college golf, featuring six teams ranked inside of the Top 10 and four more among the Top 25.
"It's a very strong field," said Bob Patton, head golf professional at Long Cove. "Short of the NCAA Championships, we've probably got one of the strongest fields in women's collegiate golf. Our golf course is probably one of the better golf courses that they have the opportunity to play, and the elements of having the concert with Darius and putting the players up in homes that are at or near the beach make it unique."
Competing alongside MSU will be No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Arkansas, No. 6 Arizona State, Auburn, Baylor No. 5 Duke, No. 9 Furman, Georgia, LSU, No.13 Northwestern, North Carolina, No.14 Oklahoma State, No. 8 South Carolina, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, No. 20 Virginia, and, No. 23 Wake Forest.
