From State To The NFL Combine: Martinas Rankin, Jordan Thomas In Indianapolis
March 01, 2018 | Football
INDIANAPOLIS – It's become an annual winter tradition with multiple Mississippi State players taking the next step in their football careers in front of hundreds of NFL scouts, executives and coaches at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Offensive tackle Martinas Rankin and receiver/tight end Jordan Thomas get their shot this weekend, showcasing their skills at the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine in Lucas Oil Stadium.
NFL Network and NFL.com will air live coverage all weekend. Rankin's on-field workout is scheduled for Friday with the offensive linemen, while Thomas will run through drills on Saturday with the wideouts.
Rankin, a 2017 first-team All-SEC selection and the recipient of the Kent Hull Trophy, is a projected early second-round draft choice and is ranked one of the top five offensive tackles available according to NFL Network's Mike Mayock.
At 6-foot-4, 308 pounds, Rankin has been praised for his work ethic, dependability and versatility. Though he saw most of his college action at tackle, he also worked at center in the spring of 2017. The Mendenhall, Miss., native played in 23 career games with 18 starts in his two-year on-field career. He became the first MSU offensive lineman to earn Coaches All-SEC first-team honors since current Oakland Raider Gabe Jackson did so in 2013.
The 6-foot-5, 265-pound Thomas is an intriguing prospect to scouts with his size and speed, which proved to be a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses in 2017. The Sumrall, Miss., native played two seasons, hauling 31 passes for 311 yards and four touchdowns. He saw most of his action on the outside in 2017 where he broke out with 22 catches for 263 yards and three touchdowns.
It's the ninth consecutive year that Mississippi State has sent multiple players to the NFL Combine and back-to-back years that a former offensive lineman has attended. Dating back to 1999, a total of 53 Bulldogs have been invited to the NFL Combine.
Rankin and Thomas in addition to other aspiring senior Bulldogs will also have the chance to work out in front of NFL scouts at MSU's Pro Day on Wednesday, March 28. The 2018 NFL Draft is scheduled April 26-28 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
