Marco Arop Named SEC Men's Runner of the Week
February 06, 2018 | Track & Field
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Marco Arop has run in two meets and has now picked up SEC weekly honors following both of them. The Mississippi State freshman was named Men's Runner of the Week following his performance at the Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Meet in Boston over the weekend.
Arop ran the 800m in 1:47.62, improving on his SEC-leading time and breaking the MSU freshman record. He sits in second in school history. The mark ranks 17th in the world, and Arop is the top Canadian in the event.
"I am very proud of Marco," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "He's going to be huge for our team as we've already seen in his first two meets. But I know he can run faster, and I'm looking forward to watching him chase the school record."
Before enrolling at MSU, Arop had previously run the event in 1:47.08 at the U20 PanAmerican Games in July. He finished second while breaking the meet record held by 1984 Olympic gold medalist Joaquim Cruz. The Bulldog indoor record is 1:46.80 set by Brandon McBride in 2015.
With his selection as the SEC Freshman of the Week on Jan. 23, Arop has now doubled MSU's prior total of SEC men's weekly awards. The only other Bulldog to have won one of the honors was Marquis Davis, who was named SEC Athlete of the Week on Feb. 12, 2003. Davis would go on to set the school record in the 200m, which he still holds. He is also third all-time in the 60m dash.
