Of course, I can't say enough about the great job done by Coach Schaefer and Coach Howland and their entire staffs. We saw the results on Monday and Tuesday of hard work that began in weight rooms and gyms this summer and I know how rewarding it is to see all that effort pay off. Now is a great time to be a fan of Mississippi State basketball with our ladies holding strong at a record-breaking 24-0 and No. 2 in the country, while our men are one of the hottest teams in the conference, now on a four-game SEC winning streak for the first time since 2008.
Coach Howland's team has three more home games this season, and Coach Schaefer's team will have three more regular season games in The Hump, as well, starting this Sunday at 1 p.m. against Kentucky. Let's keep giving these teams the support they've earned as the season hits its final stretch!
The seventh season of the Vann Stuedeman Era begins this weekend as our softball team opens the 2018 season with the Bulldog Kickoff Classic at Nusz Park starting on Friday. We've got a great group of veteran leaders on the team and a stellar freshman class ready to make an immediate impact.
Our Bulldogs play their first game of the Classic on Friday at 3 p.m. against Mississippi Valley State, then we play again right after that at 5:30 against Omaha. We'll play Missouri State on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and the rest of the bracket will be determined by the results of the first round of games with play to continue through Saturday and Sunday. I'm looking forward to getting the season started and seeing everyone at Nusz Park!
After a competitive weekend at the ITA Kickoff, our No. 14 men's tennis team is back at home for two matches this weekend at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre. Coach Roberts and his young men are a ton of fun to watch, playing with high intensity and great precision. We host San Diego State on Friday at 1 p.m. and Pepperdine at noon on Sunday. If you haven't come out to watch these guys yet then I'd encourage you to do so soon.
With the spring semester moving along, we've got more and more teams getting into the action and the successes have been widespread. Coach Ginger-Lemm and our women's golf team opened their season with an impressive Top-10 finish over the weekend, placing 8th at the UCF Challenge in Orlando. All told, three individual Bulldogs finished in the Top 25, a truly impressive team performance.
Meanwhile, Coach Dudley has our track and field teams in top form as our men's and women's teams BOTH earned first place finishes in Boston over the weekend in the Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Meet. With our women ranked No. 20 in the country and Marco Arop being named the SEC Men's Runner of the Week, our Bulldogs are on a roll early in the year.
We appreciate what you do for Mississippi State Athletics and want to encourage you to get others involved. There are three things you can do to help the athletic department at Mississippi State reach its desired goals:
1. Buy Season Tickets
2. Financially Support the Bulldog Club
3. Get Others To Do The Same
Thanks for taking the time to read this update.
Hail State!
