MSU Women Open Spring Season In Florida
February 03, 2018 | Women's Golf
STARKVILLE, Miss. – After a quick winter hiatus, the Mississippi State women's golf team returns to play in the sunshine state for University of Central Florida's spring season header, the UCF Challenge.
The tournament is slated for Monday Feb. 4- 6 at the prestigious Eagle Creek Golf Club.
The 16-team field is typically said to be one of the toughest of the year, and this year is no different. Auburn and Vanderbilt are the only other SEC foes competing against the Bulldogs. ECU, Miami, Penn State, UNCW, Iowa, SMU, College of Charleston, Memphis, Old Dominion, Tulane, Wisconsin, and Texas Tech fill the rest of the field.
The Bulldogs have seen much success at the UCF Challenge in past seasons. Former MSU great and current TLPGA tour player, Jessica Peng, took medalist honors last season with a three-day 205 (-11) and led the team to a 3rd-place finish. MSU hopes to keep the scorecards low again this year.
A very young lineup is scheduled to make the trip for coach Ginger Brown-Lemm's team. The SEC's top freshman, Aubree Jones, will head the Bulldog lineup. Joining her, in the second slot, is sophomore Ela Grimwood. Freshman Blair Stockett is making her inaugural collegiate appearance in the starting lineup after a strong winter offseason.
"I am really excited for my first opportunity to make the travel team," Stockett said. "I really think that practicing over the Christmas break, and taking that time to work on my weaknesses, really put me in a better spot during qualifying. I am very excited and ready to play hard this week."
Sophomore Athena Yang and junior Kendall Wisenbaker fill the rest of the spots, while transfer sophomore Clara Moyano plays as an individual.
MSU tees off for a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Follow the action live at golfstat.com.
