While we're on the subject of doling out congratulations, we have a great many to send to our No. 2 women's basketball team after finishing the regular season undefeated, the first time it's happened in the SEC in 20 years. At 30-0, Coach Schaefer has our Bulldogs rolling through one of the best seasons Mississippi State athletics has ever seen, and for those efforts he was quite deservingly named the SEC Coach of the Year. All told, we had eight different honors as Teaira McCowan and Victoria Vivians were unanimously voted first-team AP All-SEC, Morgan William was named All-SEC second team, Teaira and Blair Schaefer were named to the league's All-Defensive team and Teaira was voted the Co-Defensive Player of the Year in the conference.
We'll be cheering on the entire team this weekend in Nashville at the SEC Tournament and we look forward to seeing where their season goes from there. They will open the tournament (as the No. 1 seed) Friday at noon and will face either Alabama or Kentucky.
On that note, be on the lookout for news about the NCAA Tournament Selection Show watch party at The Hump in a couple of weeks. While we don't yet know opponents or regions, we already have tickets on sale for the first and second rounds of the tournament should they be played at Humphrey Coliseum. After season ticket holders got first dibs, ticket packages are now open to all Bulldog Club members and will be for the general public on March 8. You can purchase yours by visiting www.hailstate.com/tickets or by calling the ticket office.
Even with five of our teams on the road, we've got a big week of action at home with eight total opportunities to watch your Bulldogs on campus over the next several days.
The events begin tomorrow as Coach Greenan and our women's tennis team open 2018 SEC action, welcoming No. 13 South Carolina for a 3 p.m. match. Then our ladies play a doubleheader at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre on Saturday, welcoming Florida at noon followed by a match against Alcorn State at 3.
Meanwhile, Coach Roberts and his men's tennis team continue rising up the rankings and open their SEC schedule with a showdown against Auburn on Sunday at 1 p.m. Make sure to come out and cheer on your Bulldog tennis teams this week!
And finally, job well done by Coach Stuedeman and the ladies of her softball team for playing an incredibly difficult and demanding tournament in California over the weekend and emerging with three big wins, including two over ranked teams. The effort was good enough to get our Bulldogs into the Top 25 for the first time this year! This weekend, Nusz Park will be host to the Bulldog Slamboree, featuring games against Lamar, Mercer and Sam Houston State. We play Friday at 3:30, Saturday at 11:30 and 2, and on Sunday we finish the weekend off at 2 p.m. I look forward to seeing everyone there.
And of course I can't finish without saying good luck to all of our Bulldogs away from home this weekend, with baseball, men's basketball, men's golf and women's golf all hitting the road. We'll be rooting for all of you from all over the country!
We appreciate what you do for Mississippi State Athletics and want to encourage you to get others involved. There are three things you can do to help the athletic department at Mississippi State reach its desired goals:
1. Buy Season Tickets
2. Financially Support the Bulldog Club
3. Get Others To Do The Same
Thanks for taking the time to read this update.
Hail State!
