Not only is this the first SEC Title for our women's basketball program, it was the first overall SEC Championship for ANY women's sport in school history. We've watched over the last several years as Coach Schaefer's teams have continued to break records, set new standards and make more and more history along the way, and this year's team is the best one yet. These Bulldogs are incredibly entertaining to watch and supremely deserving of the constant support you have shown them all year.
But like Coach Schaefer said after being presented with the trophy on Sunday, we're not done yet.
While we anticipate that games during the next week will not be the last in The Hump this spring, they do represent the final regular season home games for both of our basketball teams. As such, the seniors from each squad will be honored and I look forward to the opportunity to celebrate their careers.
Coach Howland and our men play South Carolina at 2:30 on Saturday for a big SEC matchup here at the end of the season. Then, next Tuesday, they will host Tennessee at 6 and, before the game, we will honor our lone senior, walk-on guard Drew Davis. Like walk-ons in any sport, Drew has made a tremendous sacrifice on behalf of his teammates, his program and the university, putting in all the work of a scholarship athlete without many of the benefits. Student-athletes like Drew are as deserving of our respect as any and I know you'll join me in sending him off in style.
Tomorrow night, our No. 2-ranked ladies host Auburn in their final home game of the season, and in what is also our chance to help reach our Cadence Bank 110K for 10K goal of breaking the season-long attendance record with over 110,000 of you filling The Hump. With tickets sold out already, we expect to reach that mark tomorrow and I'm excited for Coach Schaefer to present a check for $10,000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Starkville, a group that is special to he and his family. After the game, we will honor an incredibly special group of seniors, so make sure to stick around as we say thank you to Victoria Vivians, Roshunda Johnson, Blair Schaefer and Morgan William. They have helped build MSU into what it is today and their achievements will be remembered for generations to come.
Rounding out the weekend of action at home this week, Coach Greenan and our 7-2 women's tennis team hosts Memphis Saturday at 2 p.m., a great opportunity to come out and see a program competing with the nation's elite on a regular basis. Combined with Coach Roberts' 5-1 men's tennis team, who is headed to Tulane Friday for a big matchup, the state of our tennis programs has rarely been better. Now is the time to get out and support these teams.
Meanwhile, Coach Stuedeman and her softball team are off to another impressive start, sitting at 9-1 after barely two weeks of play. They're out of town this weekend for their first road trip as they head to California for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic against some of the top teams from around the country. We wish them good luck and safe travels as they represent MSU on the west coast!
We appreciate what you do for Mississippi State Athletics and want to encourage you to get others involved. There are three things you can do to help the athletic department at Mississippi State reach its desired goals:
1. Buy Season Tickets
2. Financially Support the Bulldog Club
3. Get Others To Do The Same
Thanks for taking the time to read this update.
Hail State!
