February 12, 2018 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Behind an impressive debut weekend that showcased her power at the plate, catcher/infielder Mia Davidson was selected as the first Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week of the 2018 softball season, the league announced on Monday.
Davidson becomes the first freshman Bulldogs to earn the weekly honor since pitching ace Alexis Silkwood was tabbed SEC Freshman of the Week twice over the 2014 season. The accolade comes after the Hillsborough, N.C., native led all SEC freshman at the plate with a .667 average over opening weekend. The freshman also tied with teammate senior utility player Morgan Bell for an SEC-leading 1.333 slugging percentage over the first weekend of the season.
The Bulldogs (4-0) made history over opening weekend with four consecutive shutouts to win the Bulldog Kickoff Classic, marking the first time in program history that MSU has opened a season blanking opponents in four straight contests.
Davidson started all four contests for the Bulldogs, earning three starts behind the plate. The power hitter went 8-for-12 with a walk at the plate, slugging two doubles and two home runs. Davidson scored a team-leading six times over the first weekend of play and picked up five RBIs.
During her collegiate debut in MSU's 10-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State, Davidson went 1-for-1 with a walk and two runs scored. Her first collegiate hit came in the bottom of the second as she flashed her speed to beat out an infield single to third base.
Davidson closed out her perfect opening day performance with a 3-hit outing in State's 8-0 victory against Omaha. Davidson was a perfect 3-for-3 and was just a triple shy of through hitting the cycle as she roped her first collegiate double and home run in the contest. She tallied three RBIs and scored twice.
Flexing her muscle in the Bulldogs' 5-0 victory over Missouri State on Sunday, Davidson recorded two hits, including a two-run home run rocketed to right field. Davidson wrapped up her impressive debut weekend with a 2-for-4 outing with a run scored in MSU's 8-0 win over Mississippi Valley State.
Davidson and the Bulldogs will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 15 against UT Martin at Nusz Park. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m CT and the midweek tilt will be streamed on the SEC Network via WatchESPN and the WatchESPN app. The Bulldogs will remain at home this weekend to host the February Freezer, beginning on Friday, February 16. The tournament field features Murray State, Drake and South Alabama.
