STARKVILLE – Already a proven champion, winning the 2018 Mississippi's 3A State Championship, head softball coach Vann Stuedeman announced infielder/outfielder Aquana Brownlee as the third member of Mississippi State's 2019 signing class.
"Aquana is an extremely talented and athletic player that possesses a tremendous amount of raw power and speed," Stuedeman said. "She has the ability to change the game with one swing of the bat as well as a knack for being around the ball on defense. She is a very versatile player from down the road in Houston. We are excited to be a part of her continued development and proud she chose Mississippi State."
Brownlee is entering her senior season as a captain for Houston High School softball program after leading the Hilltoppers to the 2018 3A State Championship with a victory at Nusz Park earlier this spring.
"Mississippi State has always been my dream school," Brownlee said. "Mississippi State runs in my family. Everyone who has went on to play Division I sports have played at Mississippi State. Also, the atmosphere drew me in. It feels like one big family, and you're always taken care of."
The Houston, Mississippi, native turned in an outstanding junior year there she was named the Daily Journal's Player of the Year. She led the Hilltoppers at the plate with a .598 batting clip and recorded a team-leading 45 stolen bases en route to being named the program's Most Valuable Player.
Brownlee also added Division 4-3A Most Valuable Player honors and racked up the division's Offensive Player of the Year and DJ Preps Player of the Year honors.
Over her sophomore season, Brownlee held a .500 batting average coupled with a .900 slugging percentage. Again, she led the team with 24 stolen bases, finishing with a .923 stole base percentage. Brownlee closed the year with Division 4-4A MVP honors and was named the division's Offensive Player of the Year.
As a freshman, Brownlee helped the Hilltoppers to an 17-10 record. She closed the season as the team's top offensive player with a .451 batting average and a .817 slugging percentage.
On the travel ball scene, Brownlee competes with the Alabama Sports Elite under head coach Slade Stewart.
Brownlee was a three-sport athlete over her career with Houston High School. She earned four letters with the varsity basketball team and two with the track program while holding the school record for the long jump.
Academically, Brownlee is a honor roll student and a member of the Beta Club.
She is the daughter of A.Q. and Michelle Brownlee and has four siblings. Her father played collegiate football at Murray State while her sister Kat Payne competed in basketball at ICC.
