STARKVILLE – After Day 1 of Mississippi State track and field's preseason intrasquad meet on Friday, the Gray team holds a strong 10-point lead going into Saturday's track events.
Friday's action featured field events, with Gray racking up 42 points. The White team enters Saturday in second with 32, followed closely behind by the Maroon squad with 30.
"I like the attitude of this team," interim head coach Chris Woods said. "Everybody is coming in with a competitive mindset. They're all trying to figure out ways to win, which is what this program is about. It's just learning how to win. You have to practice anything that you want to be able to do at a high level. The only way we can really learn how to win is by practicing winning. We have to practice winning championships before we can go win championships. That's the mindset of this coaching staff and our student-athletes, and that's what we're looking for."
The meet is using a 5-3-2-1 scoring format, with the relays being scored 5-3-1. Teams may not score more than twice in a single event. For example, if Maroon took first, second and third, the fourth-place athlete would be bumped up to third for scoring purposes and collect two points.
Gray was led by Gralyn Jones on the men's side with 10 points combined across the high, long and triple jumps, while Alicia Viveros earned 7 combined in the weight throw and shot put. Reigning NCAA javelin champion Anderson Peters also tallied 6 total points in both throwing events.
White earned a quick early lead with 12 total points in the high jump propelled by first-place finishes from Logan Boss and Reggie Miller, but Gray battled back strongly after that to take the lead and finish the first day on top of the team standings.
Thrower Jeremiah Pierce notched 10 points for the Maroon squad, while Tiffany Flynn leads Maroon's women with 8 points after winning the triple jump and finishing second in the long jump.
Saturday features track events, with the 10-mile road race around campus kicking off the day at 11:30 a.m. The final gun will fire at 3 p.m. for a mixed 4x400m with two men and two women running alternating legs for each team.
