JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi State football junior defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons is one of 10 nominees for the C Spire Conerly Trophy, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum announced Monday.
The C Spire Conerly Trophy is awarded to the most outstanding college football player in Mississippi. The 10 nominees represent the football-playing universities and colleges across the state and have been chosen by their athletic departments. The winner will be announced Tuesday, November 27, at the Country Club of Jackson.
A combination of votes from the C Spire fan voting and a poll of sports news media representatives determine the winner. Fan voting begins today at 5 p.m. CT and runs through noon on Sunday, November 25. Voters can cast a ballot up to three times per day at www.cspire.com/Conerly.
A dominant interior force, Simmons leads all SEC defensive linemen with 55 tackles this season and ranks tied for fifth in the conference with 12.5 tackles for loss. He boasts a 90.0 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, which is fifth in the FBS among defensive interior linemen, and he also owns a 91.7 grade in the run game that ranks fourth nationally. Simmons has recorded 28 stops and 22 total pressures, including 17 hurries according to PFF.
Simmons has totaled 28.0 tackles for loss in his career, which ranks seventh all-time in MSU history. He also has recorded five sacks during his three seasons.
Past Mississippi State winners of the award include J.J. Johnson (1998), Jerious Norwood (2005), Anthony Dixon (2009), Chris White (2010), Gabe Jackson (2013) and Dak Prescott (2014, 2015).
Tickets are on sale now for the Conerly Trophy banquet at the Hall of Fame office and online at www.msfame.com. Advance tickets are required and no sales will be available at the doors. All proceeds benefit the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.
