The following feature story can be found in the Oct. 27 Mississippi State Football Game Program.
Mississippi State soccer senior Jen Huckaby knows she will never be defined by playing time, stat lines or accolades. The Frisco, Texas, native finds her identity in something greater than herself— a grounded relationship in her faith that constantly connects her to her loved ones.
Â
Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a well-known organization within universities across the nation. Huckaby is an active member of MSU's chapter, where she spends weekly time delving into her faith with teammates and fellow student-athletes on campus.Â
Â
Early in her college stretch, Huckaby was introduced to FCA by one of the soccer squad's managers, as she encouraged her to join in on a Monday-night meeting to start the spring semester. She reluctantly agreed, leading Huckaby to grow in a new faith family, while being surrounded by student-athletes who shared values rooted in a faith-filled life.Â
Â
"When you're walking around and seeing other athletes, your first thought is not that they know Jesus," said Huckaby. "It's cool to go to FCA and be around people that are like-minded. We can hold each other accountable and make each other better."
Â
Since finding her home-away-from-home off the soccer field, you can always count on Huckaby's infectious smile in FCA's Monday night meetings, Wednesday women's bible study and even helping lead the Bulldogs' team bible studies. Huckaby allows her faith to permeate into all aspects of her life, as she says she treats her friends, family and teammates with selflessness.Â
Â
FCA has given Huckaby a firm foundation and support system while at MSU. Her experiences through FCA led her to meet her fiancé, Blake. Huckaby - soon to be Jen Stacy - is set marry her fiancé in December, following the couple's engagement on this year's Good Friday.Â
Â
The friend who inspired her to attend her first FCA meeting will also stand with her, as a bridesmaid, in her wedding.
Â
Huckaby's friends and family have supported her throughout her journey in FCA and as a part of the MSU soccer program. Following her wedding this winter, she hopes to attend physical therapy school, as she aspires to join that respective field.Â
Â
Whether it is a new name, sport or career, Huckaby knows that she will always be identified by her faith and dedication to loved ones.
Â
"FCA has really challenged my line of thinking and to step outside of what culture says about college athletics," said Huckaby. "It's been cool having a different vision for my team, teammates and the way I interact with them."
