Children's of Mississippi Kid Captain of the Week: Blake Stone
October 03, 2018 | Football
Kid Captain is a partnership between Children's of Mississippi and the Mississippi State Bulldogs to salute pediatric patients. Their inspirational stories remind us just how truly courageous these young people are. This week's Children's of Mississippi Kid Captain is Blake Stone of Philadelphia.
Blake Stone – Philadelphia, MS
Blake's journey with Batson Children's Hospital began when, at one month old, he had surgery to repair a hole in his heart. Since then, Blake, now six years old, has been diagnosed with a variety of conditions requiring multiple surgeries and procedures.
Over the years, Blake has had surgery on his face to repair a cleft palate, on his arm to treat Erbs Palsy, inside his trachea to treat a narrowed airway, and others. Most recently, he had his fourth brain surgery for Chiari Malformation, a structural defect that causes brain tissue to extend into the spinal canal. Blake's medical team, which includes 18 different pediatric specialists, says he has a rare genetic disorder that causes his many medical problems.
Even though Blake has been through a lot, he doesn't let much slow him down. His parents, Chad and Ashley, say he is tough and unstoppable.
Blake loves camping, his iPad, and playing baseball with the "Diamond Dreams" special needs league.
Have fun at Saturday's game, Blake! Your friends at Children's of Mississippi are cheering for you!
