Children's of Mississippi Kid Captain of the Week: K.J. Fields
October 24, 2018 | Football
Kid Captain is a partnership between Children's of Mississippi and the Mississippi State Bulldogs to salute pediatric patients. Their inspirational stories remind us just how truly courageous these young people are. This week's Children's of Mississippi Kid Captain is K.J. Fields of Mount Olive.
K.J. Fields – Mount Olive, MS
Five years ago, K.J. was driving his go-cart home from his aunt's house when he was struck by a car. K.J. was airlifted to Batson Children's Hospital where doctors treated his concussion, collapsed lung, broken pelvic bone and fractured spine. His injuries were so severe that he is not able to walk, but that hasn't slowed him down.
He now thrives in wheelchair basketball as a Shark with the Lakeshore Foundation. He has also won gold medals in wheelchair archery, javelin, shot put, and wheelchair cycling. K.J. recently accepted his highest honor to date, the Rising Star Award from the Challenged Athletes Foundation.
K.J.'s journey continues to inspire others, and he is as full of life as ever!
Have fun at Saturday's game, K.J.! Your friends at Children's of Mississippi are cheering for you!
