In particular, I want to extend heartfelt congratulations to our football team for what was a truly inspiring and unforgettable win over Louisville in the 2017 TaxSlayer Bowl. Facing adversity in unique circumstances, our Bulldogs put on an incredible effort in the name of family and gave us a victory we should all be proud of. There are a great many people to thank for such an enjoyable and rewarding experience, starting with interim Coach Greg Knox and the staff who took on the responsibility of leading our young men with enthusiasm and care. Your efforts are appreciated and will not be forgotten.
And of course, I want to thank all of you for supporting the team, whether in Jacksonville or from afar. The bond between our fan base and our teams is a shining example of what makes college athletics so special. Now, on to 2018 and the first year for Coach Moorhead!
Since my last letter, basketball season has begun in earnest with the start of conference play for both our men's and women's teams after impressive non-conference slates for them both. Coach Schaefer and his ladies are now up to No. 3 in the country after an impressive win at Georgia on New Year's Eve, and they host an important game tomorrow night at The Hump as we welcome Arkansas for an 8 p.m. tipoff broadcast on SEC Network. A testament to how great our 15-0 ladies are doing, the SEC has awarded eight Player of the Week honors this season, and five of them have gone to Bulldogs with junior forward Teaira McCowan taking the award this week, her third time already.
Meanwhile, Coach Howland and our men treated us to a great win last night over an Arkansas team that was not only ranked in the Top 25 of the polls, but has a Top-5 RPI nationally. If you haven't made it to The Hump to watch our 13-1 men's team, make plans to do so soon. Our young team has come together in impressive fashion and is deserving of our support.
Looking ahead to the weekend, both teams are on the road with the women playing at LSU on Sunday at 1 p.m. on SEC Network and the men traveling to Ole Miss on Saturday at 3:30 for a game broadcast nationally on SEC Network. Good luck to our teams this week!
As we announced earlier this week, DawgTalk at The Veranda in Starkville will turn to a new format this spring featuring both of our great basketball coaches. It will start with a special two-hour edition tonight from 7-9 p.m. with Coach Howland joining host Neil Price in the first hour and Coach Schaefer taking over for the second hour. Going forward, the two coaches will alternate weeks for the one-hour show. Full information on the schedule and radio affiliates can be found here.
We appreciate what you do for Mississippi State Athletics and want to encourage you to get others involved. There are three things you can do to help the athletic department at Mississippi State reach its desired goals:
1. Buy Season Tickets
2. Financially Support the Bulldog Club
3. Get Others To Do The Same
Thanks for taking the time to read this update.
Hail State!
