STARKVILLE, Miss. - Rounding out Mississippi State softball's 21st-ranked 2018 signing class will be one of the bright young stars from the state of California as head coach Vann Stuedeman announced the signing of Chloe Malau'ulu.
"We are excited to bring in Chloe from the talent-rich recruiting grounds of Southern California," said assistant coach Tyler Bratton, who recruited Malau'ulu to Starkville. "She brings a combination of power and speed and an energy level that will resonate within our clubhouse. She is fun to watch and has the ability to impact the game with her speed or with one swing of the bat. Time and time again, she came through in clutch situations for Rose Rogers' USA Athletics team. Chloe, a track and field athlete as well, comes from an athletic family being the daughter of former University of Arizona quarterback George Malau'ulu. We are thrilled to welcome Chloe to our family!"
The seventh and final member of the Bulldogs' 2018 signing class, the Long Beach, Calif., native comes to the Maroon and White as a powerful hitter with lightning-quick speed.
"Coach Bratton is an excellent recruiter," added Stuedeman. "He recruits student-athletes that will flourish in our selfless, excellent and competitive culture. Chloe is another example of coach Bratton's outstanding recruiting skills."
Malau'ulu is preparing to take on her senior season as the captain of the St. Anthony Saints. She transferred to St. Anthony for her junior and senior season after two strong seasons at Valley Christian High School.
"I chose MSU because I did want to go away for college and experience a true college town," Malau'ulu said. "MSU has so much to offer. I've researched and heard so much about how great the school is, and the athletics are on the up and up. There's nothing like playing in the SEC, and I am so excited to be attending MSU this fall."
Over her freshman and sophomore seasons at Valley Christian, Malau'ulu led the team to back-to-back league championships. During her sophomore season, Valley Christian also earned CIF-SS Championship honors as Malau'ulu's play was honored with First Team All-League and All-CIF accolades.
In her first season at St. Anthony, Malau'ulu continued to turn in championship performances. The Saints earned the 2017 Division 6 CIF-SS Championship, while Malau'ulu led the team with 13 home runs.
A two-sport athlete, Malau'ulu has also had a successful career as a member of the track and field program, competing in the long jump, triple jump and the 4 x 400 relay. She helped lead Valley Christian to the league championship and earned Most Improved honors.
Turning to travel ball, Malau'ulu is a standout for USA Athletics 18U Gold under head coach Mike Rogers. Over the 2016 season, Mala'ulu led the team with the PGF Platinum Division Championship game as USA Athletics finished as runner-ups. USA Athletics also has strong showings in the Independence Day Tournament and Champions Cup, placing fifth in both outings. Malau'ulu is a staple at the top of the order and held the highest batting average over the 2017 season.
In the classroom, Malau'ulu is just as successful. She is a member of the National Honors Society. She is also the president of the Pacific Islanders Club.
The daughter of George and Vivian Malau'ulu, Chloe continues the tradition of collegiate athletics as her father was a quarterback at the University of Arizona. Outside of softball, Malau'ulu enjoys writing, playing instruments and singing. She also volunteers with Beacon for Him. She plans to major in business with a focus in sports media.
