First, a big thank you goes to all of you who braved the elements and came to The Hump last night to cheer on Coach Howland and his team in a decisive victory over Vanderbilt. We know it wasn't easy for some of you to make it, and we are particularly proud of our students for taking advantage of the surprise break from school and filling up the student section. You helped create a great atmosphere in circumstances that were less than ideal, and we have no doubt that your support helped make that win happen.
Speaking of big crowds, a huge shout out goes to all 9,000-plus Bulldogs who packed out The Hump on Sunday for a big rivalry win over Alabama. Coach Schaefer's Bulldogs are 19-0 and ranked No. 3 in the country, and with your help, we can keep that ball rolling. Your consistent and fervent support has made Humphrey Coliseum one of the premier places in the country for women's college basketball, and the team's achievements reflects that commitment to success.
This weekend, we wish good luck to both of our teams on the road. Our men play at Alabama on Saturday, while our women play at Tennessee on Sunday.
Those who have been following the last few years know how much success our women's tennis program has been having lately, a testament to the job Coach Daryl Greenan has done in methodically and passionately building the program. We're expecting another great season for our ladies - who finished 2017 ranked No. 20 - as they begin the 2018 campaign with a home doubleheader on Monday. We hope you'll join me in cheering them on at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre this year, starting on Monday with back-to-back matches against Arkansas State at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Praise is also due for Coach Matt Roberts and our men's tennis program for their sustained success under his leadership with great accomplishments on both the team and individual level. Our 14th-ranked Bulldogs opened the season Sunday with a 7-0 shutout win over UAB and they're back at home for two tough matches this week, hosting South Florida at 1 p.m. Friday and Miami at noon on Sunday.
We appreciate what you do for Mississippi State Athletics and want to encourage you to get others involved. There are three things you can do to help the athletic department at Mississippi State reach its desired goals:
1. Buy Season Tickets
2. Financially Support the Bulldog Club
3. Get Others To Do The Same
Thanks for taking the time to read this update.
Hail State!
