STARKVILLE, Miss. – There's no place like home. The Mississippi State women's golf team plays its first home tournament since 2014 as it tees off the inaugural Magnolia Invitational starting Sunday at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss.
The Magnolia Invite will be played over three days at Old Waverly Golf Club, one of the top golf courses in the South. Teams will play 18 holes each day, with final round action set for Tuesday.
The Bulldogs are co-hosting the event with in-state counterpart, Ole Miss, and admission is free for all three days.
"Old Waverly is one of the world-class golf courses in the South," MSU head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. "We are humbled to co-host this elite collegiate event with Ole Miss. We are privileged to call the Old Waverly and Mossy Oak facilities partners with Mississippi State golf, and the opportunity to share them with other programs is a real treat. The Old Waverly membership has opened their arms to this event, supplying volunteers and even sponsoring a dinner for the visiting teams. We are very thankful for their hospitality."
MSU has a strong five playing this week, led by freshman Aubree Jones, the 51st-best best player in the nation according to golfweek.com. Jones is coming off a Top 20 finish at last week's Schooner Fall Classic after tying for third in her collegiate debut at The Ocean Course Invitational.
Sophomores Athena Yang and Clara Moyano join Jones in the line-up along with juniors Kendall Wisenbaker and Katie Holt.
Sophomores Teri Doss and Ela Grimwood join redshirt senior Blaise Carabello as individuals in the event. In-state product Blair Stockett will also make her Bulldog debut as an individual participant.
Brown-Lemm's young Bulldog squad heads into Sunday's first round looking to build on the experience of playing against a talented field last week in Oklahoma.
"Our team continues to work hard daily, learning and growing with each event," Brown-Lemm said. "Two events into the season, I know our future is very bright, and we are excited about where we are heading as a program."
In addition to MSU and Ole Miss, the 10-team field includes fellow SEC members Auburn, LSU and Tennessee. Augusta, Kanasas State, Memphis, Southern Miss and Troy comprise the remaining team in the inaugural event which Brown-Lemm hopes can showcase the outstanding golf courses and talent in the Magnolia State.
Sunday's opening round begins at 7:30 a.m., with all groups teeing off on No. 1. The Bulldogs begin play at 8:30 a.m.
