LONDON — Now for Brandon McBride, the focus is gold.
Sunday at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the former Mississippi State All-American and NCAA champion punched his ticket to the finals of the 2017 IAAF World Championships in the 800m run with a time of 1:45.53.
McBride, representing Team Canada, won his heat after leading from start to finish and posted the third-fastest time overall behind Kenya's Kipyegon Bett (1:45.02) and Ethiopia's Mohammed Aman (1:45.40).
The finals are set for 3:35 p.m. CT Tuesday.
"Brandon couldn't have hit his plan any more exact than he did today," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "Brandon trains to run fast, so this is what he does in races. It doesn't make much since to train one way then race differently. He has matured tremendously on the international level. Tuesday, everyone will get to see a crazy exciting 800-meter final. Brandon has a huge, caring heart. My money on Tuesday is all in on his heart."
Also enjoying success on Sunday was Byhalia, Miss., native Erica Bougard in the heptathlon.
The former MSU All-American and NCAA champion concluded her London stay with an 18th-place finish after grinding out 6,036 points.
On her second and final day of competition, she finished fourth in the 800m run (2:08.77), 13th in the long jump (19-11.75) and 28th in the javelin (110-9).
