Alexis Silkwood earned her 56th-career victory on Saturday to become the all-time winningest pitcher in MSU history.
Silkwood Sets Career Wins Record As MSU Downs South Carolina, 6-4
April 08, 2017 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Another game, another Mississippi State record that now belongs to Alexis Silkwood.
Behind a 7.0 inning performance that featured six strikeouts, Silkwood (12-3) led the Bulldogs (28-13, 3-8 SEC) to a 6-4 victory against the South Carolina Gamecocks (23-15, 3-10 SEC) on Saturday to set the all-time MSU wins record with 56-career victories.
Silkwood's new title of winningest pitcher in MSU history adds to an already impressive list of records the senior currently holds. The East Alton, Ill., native also owns the Bulldog career records for strikeouts (531), innings pitched (613.2) and complete games (48).
"I am really just so happy for her," MSU coach Vann Stuedeman said. "She works hard and fights for this team every single day. She's beaten everyone in the country. It's like Vic Schaefer said about his team, don't dare give her any credit, don't pick her, because she's better with her back against the wall. I'm really just happy for her."
After Silkwood started off the game by striking out two and stranding a USC runner, the Bulldogs took their first turn at bat and drew first blood. Bevia Robinson earned a lead-off walk and then proceeded to steal her 23rd base of the season. Robinson was moved to third on a Reggie Harrison groundout and then was brought home thanks to the bat of Caroline Seitz, as the senior earned one of her two doubles on the day to put State up 1-0.
The Gamecocks would waste no time in responding, hitting a two-run homer in the second frame to jump ahead, 2-1.
Despite being down, the Dogs were far from out. Enter the bottom of the third, where MSU took back the lead for good. After getting a pair of runners on with back-to-back walks, State retook the lead off the bat of Calyn Adams, who earned her first of three hits on the day with a two-RBI single to right center.
Up 4-2, the Bulldogs weren't done just yet. Robinson would open the bottom of the fourth with a double and would eventually be brought home thanks to another double from Seitz. State would tack on another run with the next batter, as Adams drove in her third run of the day with a single up the middle.
South Carolina would threaten in the fifth, driving home a run via sac fly to cut the lead to three. The Gamecocks would chisel it down to two in the sixth thanks to an RBI double. With runners on second and third and one out, USC looked poised to jump back ahead, but a standout 4-3-6 double play would shut the threat down and send the game to the home half of the inning.
After MSU stranded three in the sixth, Silkwood went back to work to put the finishing touches on her record-breaking win. After a fly out on the first pitch and a groundout of the next batter, Silkwood ended the game with her sixth strikeout, as the batter went down swinging to seal the MSU victory.
"It was a fun, fun, fun day," Silkwood said. "This just means that we're unstoppable and we can compete with the best of the best, because we are the best of the best. It's awesome to see all of Starkville out here supporting us. You can't describe it. It's fun to go out there and not just do it for the girl next to me, but for the city of Starkville, this university and all the little girls that play softball."
A total of 1,413 fans packed into Nusz Park on Saturday, marking the third-largest Super Bulldog Weekend crowd in school history and the seventh largest overall.
Helping push Silkwood to the win was the standout play of MSU's offense, as the Dogs recorded 10 hits on the day, their 11th game of the year with at least 10 hits. Of the 10, five were two baggers, marking the most doubles in a game since recording five against Memphis on April 22, 2015.
Adams led the way for the Maroon and White, tallying a career day with a 3-for-3 performance with three RBI, one double and a run scored. The showing is the eighth multi-hit game and second multi-RBI game of the year for Adams, while also marking the first time in her career to earn three hits and three runs batted in against an opponent.
The junior has been on a tear this weekend, going 5-for-6 over the two games and currently leads MSU with a scorching .433 clip in league play.
Seitz and Katie Anne Bailey also turned in multi-hit showings, each recording two. Seitz also drove in two runs, moving her season total for multi-RBI contests to a team-high six games.
Robinson, Morgan Bell and Emily Heimberger rounded out MSU's offensive production, each tallying a hit.
The Bulldogs and Gamecocks face off tomorrow in the final game of the weekend with the series on the line. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. CT from Nusz Park. Fans can catch all the action in person, as there is free admission to all games at Nusz or on SEC Network +, which can be accessed through WatchESPN.com or the ESPN app.

Saturday's game brought one of the largest Super Bulldog Weekend crowds in school history, as 1,413 fans made their way to Nusz Park to see the Dogs take down South Carolina. The attendance marked the third-largest Super Bulldog Weekend crowd in school history and the seventh-largest attendance overall.
Silk Now MSU's All-Time Winningest Pitcher…
It was only a matter of time before MSU's senior leader, Alexis Silkwood, brought home the record for most career victories. Throwing the 48th complete game of her career, Silkwood fanned six batters and only walked three to pick up her 56th-career victory, setting the MSU all-time record for wins. Entering the day, she was tied with Melissa Massey (2002-05) for the title of MSU's All-Time Winningest Pitcher.
As of now, Silkwood holds the MSU career records for wins (56), strikeouts (531), innings pitched (613.2) and complete games (48).
Have A Day, Calyn Adams…
Junior Calyn Adams has been red hot this weekend and that was evident in her career performance Saturday afternoon. Adams tallied a career-best 3-for-3 showing and drove in a career-high three runs in the winning effort. Adams, who is 5-for-6 this weekend and currently leads the Dogs with a .433 clip in SEC play, now has eight multi-hit games and two multi-RBI contests this season.
Hits On Hits On Hits…
With 10 hits on the day spread across six different batters, the Bulldogs have now reached the 10-hit mark in 11 contests this season. When earning at least 10 hits in a game this season, State is a perfect 11-0.
Doubles For Days…
Of MSU's 10 hits against South Carolina, five of those came in the form a double. That mark is the most since State tallied five against the Memphis Tigers on April 22, 2015 in Starkville.
Down But Never Out…
When South Carolina blasted a two-run homer in the second inning, one could say that the Gamecocks grabbed all the momentum in the game. However, when it comes to these Bulldogs, it's never that easy. MSU completed its 11th come-from-behind win this season, overcoming the 2-1 deficit with five runs over the third and fourth frames. The 11 comeback wins topples last year's total of 10.
