Bulldogs Fall In 6-2 Walk-Off Decision At No. 9 Auburn
April 29, 2017 | Softball
AUBURN, Ala. – A seventh-inning rally from the No. 9 Auburn Tigers (42-8, 14-6 SEC) ended in a walk off for the home team, as the Mississippi State Bulldogs (34-17, 8-12 SEC) dropped a 6-2 contest Saturday night in Auburn.
Caroline Seitz and Bevia Robinson once again paced the MSU offense, along with Olivia Golden. Robinson topped the team with her fifth multi-hit showing in the last six games and team-leading 15th of the season, going 2-for-3 on the night. She is now 11-for-19 in her last six games and is riding a six-game hitting streak, one shy of her career high.
Golden and Seitz provided MSU's second and third home runs of the weekend, coming in the third and fourth frames. Reggie Harrison and Amanda Ivy also both turned in a hit, giving the Dogs a total of six for the game.
Just as they did Friday night, the Bulldogs opened up the scoring with a homer in the third, as Olivia Golden launched a solo shot to left field. Her fifth bomb of the year gave the Dogs an early 1-0 lead. Seitz would follow in the fourth, smashing her second home run of the season with a solo blast of her own. She now has eight homers this season and 36 for her career. She is now one shy of former Bulldog All-American Iyhia McMichael (2001-04) for second place on State's all-time homers list.
That homer also bumped her career-high hitting streak up to 13-straight games.
MSU starter Alexis Silkwood kept the Tigers off the board for the first four frames. AU broke through in the fifth with an RBI single to cut State's lead down to 2-1. After going down in order in the sixth, Auburn began its rally in the seventh, starting with a leadoff home run to left to tie things up at 2-2. Back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases for the Tigers, who would hit a walk-off grand slam to seal the 6-2 victory.
MSU and No. 9 Auburn will close out the series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. CT showdown on SEC Network +. Fans can catch the action online on WatchESPN.com or the ESPN app.
