Bulldogs Cap Weekend Series At No. 10 LSU
April 02, 2017 | Softball
BATON ROUGE, La. – In the final game of a weekend series in Baton Rouge, the Mississippi State Bulldogs (26-12, 2-7 SEC) fell in a 4-1 decision to the 10th-ranked LSU Tigers (31-7, 7-2 SEC) on Sunday.
The Tigers opened up scoring with a run in the bottom of the second via an RBI double to right center.
From there the game became a back-and-forth, as the Bulldogs answered in the next frame. After Olivia Golden was hit by pitch, Emily Heimberger laid down an impressive sac bunt. An errant throw by the LSU second baseman allowed Heimberger to advance to second and Golden to cross home plate, tying things up at 1-1.
LSU responded in the home half of the inning, using a single, stolen base and walk to set up an RBI base hit to right to take a 2-1 advantage. After a silent fourth inning that featured 1-2-3 showings from both pitchers, the Tigers added two more runs in the fifth behind back-to-back RBI singles.
State was able to get a runner on in the sixth and seventh frames, including a hard-hit single to right from Kat Moore. However, the Tiger defense was able to hold on and kept the Dogs off the board, securing a 4-1 win.
Moore's sixth-inning single upped her career-high reached base streak to 13-straight contests. She has also hit safely in four-straight games.
Cassady Knudsen (5-3) received the start for MSU, going 4.0 innings, striking out a trio of batters and walking three. Both Alexis Silkwood and Holly Ward saw 1.0 inning of relief work for the day.
The Bulldogs now return home for a midweek showdown against in-state rival Jackson State on Wednesday, April 5. First pitch for the SEC Network + broadcast is set fro 6 p.m. CT from Nusz Park. Fans can access the game through WatchESPN.com or the ESPN app.
