MSU Earns Shutout Win At Auburn To Continue Spring Season
March 04, 2017 | Soccer
AUBURN, Ala. – In its first road test of the spring, the Mississippi State soccer team passed with flying colors as MSU upended Auburn 2-0 to spoil the Tigers' spring opener and keep momentum rolling for the new-look Bulldogs.
The win for MSU is its second of the spring, after blanking Troy last Saturday to kickoff the spring season.
"I thought we did really well today," head coach Tom Anagnost said. "I saw some growth from our last match which is always important. We competed and fought hard and didn't give up a lot of scoring chances."
The first half that was mostly neck and neck between the Bulldogs and Tigers until Mallory Eubanks took advantage of a one-on-one opportunity to burry her first goal of the spring just before the break. The score came at the 39th minute mark after a nice dish from MaKayla Waldner.
Much like the first half, the Bulldogs would again strike late in the frame for a score. This time Kiley Martens would be the attacker as she headed in her first score of the spring season. The goal was earned off a cross from Carly Mauldin at the 75th minute.
Following the score, MSU would coast to the finish line as the Bulldogs earned their second win of the spring with the 2-0 shutout on the road.
At goal, Rhylee DeCrane earned her second-consecutive shutout as she collected another clean sheet between the posts.
"We had some good individual performances and collectively I am very proud of this team," Anagnost said of the road win. "We still obviously have a lot to get better at going forward but today was a great day to be a Bulldog."
Up Next
The Bulldogs will be off until March 25 when MSU hosts Southern Miss. Kickoff between the Bulldogs and Golden Eagles is slated for 6 p.m. CT at the MSU Soccer Field.
