ORLANDO, Fla. –Behind senior Jessica Peng's career day, the Mississippi State women's golf team ended the first round of the UCF Challenge tied for 5th place, 3-under-par 285.
Coach Ginger Brown-Lemm's squad finished only two strokes behind 40th-ranked Kentucky for second place in Sunday's round. Tournament host UCF sits in first at 280.
Peng paced the team Sunday behind six birdies and a career low, 66. She ended her day tied for second place after shooting -3 on both the front and back nine holes, for a -6.
"I'm very proud of our young team. We played hard and senior Jessica Peng led the way," Brown-Lemm said. "We dropped a few coming in at the end, but for the first round this spring we are right on track to where I want us to be."
Behind Peng was freshman Athena Yang, who notched a 71 on the day, marking a career low for the rookie. She sank four birdies in a row on holes six through nine, ending tied for 21st.
Katie Holt fired a 74 after shooting even par on the front nine holes, tying the early enrollee from New Zealand, Ela Grimwood. Grimwood started her Bulldog career off strong by birding her very first colligate tournament hole.
Kendall Wisenbaker competed as an individual and notched a 75.
"Some of the best teams in the country are competing here and stacking up with them the way we did is very encouraging," said Brown-Lemm.
