Bulldog Softball Returns Home To Host February Freezer

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Returning home after an impressive showing in Mexico, the Mississippi State Bulldogs (6-3) look to keep the momentum rolling as they welcome a trio of opponents to Starkville for the February Freezer.
The Bulldog will kick off the three-day tourney against North Florida (7-5) on Friday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. CT, before closing out the day against Eastern Illinois (6-3) at 5:30 p.m.
State also welcomes Southern Illinois (6-4) to town, as the Bulldogs and Salukis will battle on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 12:30 p.m. Following that game, all four teams will be seeded according to record, with the one and four seed facing off at 3 p.m., and the two and three seed playing at 5:30 p.m. The winners will move on to a Sunday afternoon championship match (1:30 p.m.), while the remaining two teams will play a consolation showdown at 11 a.m.
Sixth-year head coach Vann Stuedeman and the Bulldogs come into the weekend with a 6-3 record after going 3-1 last weekend at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, the best record on the weekend. State picked up wins against No. 21 Fresno State, Texas Tech and Florida Gulf Coast.
Individually, the Bulldogs are led by the bat of Reggie Harrison and the pitching of Alexis Silkwood. Harrison, who paces the squad with a .429 clip, .667 slugging percentage and .556 OBP, was named the MVP of the PVCC last week. Joining her on the PVCC All-Tournament Team were Silkwood, Caroline Seitz and Bevia Robinson.
Silkwood tearing it up in the circle so far this year, holding a perfect 5-0 record to go along with a 0.83 ERA and 19 strikeouts. The MSU senior currently stands just eight strikeouts away setting the new school record for career Ks and seven wins from becoming the winningest pitcher in MSU history.
After the Freezer closes out on Sunday, the Dogs will take on their first midweek contests of the season. MSU will head to Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday, Feb. 28, with first pitch set for 5 p.m. CT. The squad will then return home for a Thursday, March 2 showdown against Alabama State (6 p.m.).

MSU Dominates First International Trip…
The Bulldogs spent last weekend at the 2017 Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, going 3-1 with wins against No. 21 Fresno State, Texas Tech and Florida Gulf Coast to claim the weekend's best record. State landed four members on the All-Tournament squad, including Reggie Harrison, Caroline Seitz, Alexis Silkwood and Bevia Robinson.
Harrison was named MVP of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, going 7-for-12 (.583) with a home run, two doubles and two RBI long with a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base percentage.
Defense Off To A Strong Start…
After two weekends of play, the Bulldog defense has been a key to State's 6-3 start. MSU is sixth in both ERA (1.36) and fielding percentage (.976), while standing 20th and 36th nationally, respectively.
Hot Corner = Seitz's Corner…
Senior Caroline Seitz has been more than impressive so far this season, locking down third base through the first nine games. She has tallied five-plus assists in four games, including 10 against Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 11.
The 10 assists set the MSU record for most in a game and were the most since Courtney Bures had 8 in 2007 at Auburn.
Silk Rewriting The Record Books…
Senior lefty Alexis Silkwood has been putting her name all throughout the MSU record books since she arrived on campus in 2014. Now in her final year, she is poised to take over the top spot in a number of categories.

One of the highly-touted additions to the 2017 Bulldog softball squad has been JUCO transfer Bevia Robinson. Robinson comes to State via Pensacola State University, where she established herself as one of the top players in NJCAA DI.
In just eight games, she's hit .333, scoring three runs and driving in one. She is also a perfect 6-for-6 in stealing bases, which is third in the SEC and 28th in the NCAA.
Sister, Sister…
Friday's 3 p.m. showdown between Mississippi State and North Florida will feature a little sibling rivalry. MSU sophomore pitcher Regan Green and UNF senior pitcher Logan Green will face off in the circle for their respective squads.
This is not the first time a current Bulldog has faced off against a sibling, as junior Calyn Adams took on her sister, Carly, last year when MSU faced Longwood University at Nusz on March 5.
Ranked Wins Keep Coming…
With the victory against No. 21 Fresno State last week, Vann Stuedeman now has at least one ranked win in all six years she has been at the helm of the Bulldog softball program. She is the only head coach since MSU reached varsity status in 1997 to have a ranked win in every year of their tenure.
