February 17, 2017 | Men's Tennis
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 16th-ranked Mississippi State men's tennis team (4-2) gave a tremendous effort against No. 2 Wake Forest (7-0) on Friday at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, but couldn't pull off the upset as the Bulldogs fell to the Demon Deacons 4-0.
MSU now moves on to the consolation bracket, as the Bulldogs will be matched up against SEC-foe and sixth-ranked Florida (6-2) on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT. The Gators fell to No. 11 Texas, 4-2, on Friday to set up Saturday's contest against the Bulldogs.
"We pushed No. 2 Wake Forest in doubles and had a great opportunity to change the outcome of today's match," head coach Matt Roberts said. "Wake Forest is a deep and talented team and we tip our cap to those guy's because they earned it. This is a good experience for our young team and we're going to take today and learn from it. We have another great opportunity tomorrow against No. 6 Florida and our guy's are ready to get back out on the court."
The win for Wake Forest sends the Demon Deacons to the second round of the ITA Indoors as the No. 2 ranked squad plays No. 11 Texas on Saturday.
It was a battle to begin Friday's match at the Boar's Head Sports Club as the Bulldogs and Demon Deacons went back and forth for most of the doubles period. Wake Forest held the early advantage, as Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic were defeated 6-2 by the pair of Petros Chrysochos and Dennis Uspensky, but the Bulldogs fought back on courts one and two.
No. 44 Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey, who were matched up against the nation's No. 1 team in Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim, forced a tiebreaker on court one as the pair fought back from an early deficit. On court two, the Bulldog tandem of Mate Cutura and Giovanni were fueling a comeback of their own as the two tied Wake Forest's Borna Gojo and Alan Gadjiev at 5-5.
With the doubles point in the balance, the Demon Deacons would clinch as Gojo/Gadjiev staved off MSU's Cutura/Oradini to win, 7-5. The match between No. 44 Braun/Foshey and No. 1 Mansouri/Uspensky was suspended with the Bulldogs holding a 4-2 lead in the tiebreaker.
In singles action, Wake Forest claimed the first six sets from MSU as the Demon Deacons jumped out to a quick start against the Bulldogs. State would lose back-to-back 6-1, 6-4 matches at the bottom of the lineup as freshman Simon Baudry fell to Gadjiev and Braun couldn't overcome Uspensky.
Leading 3-0, the Bulldogs would begin to press as Oradini picked up MSU's first set win of the match after forcing a third set. The freshman dropped his opening set, 6-3, to No. 26 Seraphim, before bouncing back to take the second set, 6-3, over the ranked foe.
No. 3 Borges, Cutura and Rakic would all respond with their own surges as the three each tied their matches in the second set. The Bulldogs couldn't hold off the second-ranked Demon Deacons however as Cutura fell to No. 10 Mansouri, 6-4, 7-5, to close out the match.
