Carter's Walk-Off Double Sends MSU To Bulldog Kickoff Title Game

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Behind the bat of Carmen Carter and the speed of Bevia Robinson, the Mississippi State Bulldogs topped Stephen F. Austin with a 2-1 walk-off victory Saturday afternoon.
State split a pair of contests on the day, falling to Western Kentucky, 1-0, before the walk-off win. Despite the loss, MSU remained the No. 1 seed and went on to face SFA in its second game of the day.
After going down 1-0 early to the Ladyjacks, the Maroon and White used RBIs from Alexis Silkwood and Carter to come back and take down SFA and advance to the championship game of the 2017 Bulldog Kickoff Classic.
Silkwood's 3-for-3 day helped key MSU's offense, with her highlight coming in the fourth. Down 1-0, Morgan Bell ripped a two-out double to right center, setting up Silkwood's RBI-double to the other side of the field.
She was also a star on the mound, completing her second-straight complete game victory. The senior tossed a pair of strikeouts and allowed only one run over 7.0 innings to capture her 46th-career win, moving her to third in the MSU record books.
After a solo home run in the first, SFA was only able to threaten one more time, loading the bases in the top of third before lining a shot to MSU junior Reggie Harrison. From there, the Ladyjacks were only able to get three runners on base the remainder of the game.
The game's final inning began with a single from Silkwood, who gave way to the pinch-running Robinson. After a foul out on the next batter, Carter stepped to the plate and wrapped it in Maroon and White with a double to the left field corner, sending Robinson from first base to home.
With the win, MSU will take on Georgia State in Sunday's championship contest, slated for a 12:30 p.m. CT, start. State captured a 4-0 win against the Panthers in Friday's season opener. The day will begin with a consolation showdown between Western Kentucky and Stephen F. Austin at 10 a.m.
MSU's first contest of the day was a low-scoring affair, as it dropped a 1-0 decision to Western Kentucky. The game's lone run came in the fourth, as the Hilltoppers moved a runner over to third via single-wild pitch-steal and brought her home on a wild throw on a steal attempt.
State nearly tied up the contest in the seventh, as Sarai Niu started things off with a single to left. Carter came on to pinch run and moved over to second on a sac bunt from Calyn Adams. However, WKU forced a pair of groundouts to secure the victory.
Once opening weekend closes out, the Bulldogs will hit the road for the first time in 2017, heading to Mexico for the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. The tournament begins Thursday, Feb. 16 and will pit the Bulldogs against Fresno State, Cal State Fullerton, Texas Tech and Florida Gulf Coast.

Silkwood also put on one of the best hitting performances of her career on Saturday, as she went 3-for-3 in the second game of the day. The senior's three hits against SFA tied a career that she has hit twice before, most recently against LSU on April 8, 2015.
Walking It Off…
Saturday's walk-off victory was the Bulldogs first such win of the 2017 season. It is also the first walk off win since coming back to defeat in-state rival Ole Miss at Nusz Park in April 3, 2016.
Knudsen Ties Career Mark In The Circle…
Despite receiving the loss in Saturday's first game, junior Cassady Knudsen still put on a show in the circle with nine strikeouts. Her total on the afternoon tied her career high, which she set in 2015 against Georgia Southern (April 26, 2015).
