MIAMI, Fla. – The outcome was never in jeopardy on Friday for the 16th-ranked Mississippi State men's tennis team (4-0) as the Bulldogs defeated the Miami Hurricanes (2-2) in a dominating display of tennis, 4-0.
No. 16 MSU will carry momentum now to Tampa, Fla., as the Bulldogs face South Florida on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT.
"We had a great team effort today against a tough ACC opponent," head coach Matt Roberts said. "I was very impressed with our doubles play and was really proud of how Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey performed at the No. 1 position. A win like this feels good, but now we have to prepare for South Florida and focus on having a great practice tomorrow."
State began doubles play with a reshuffled lineup as No. 44 Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey, along with Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic, were bumped up to the No. 1 and No. 2 positions with the third spot filled by senior Mate Cutura and freshman Giovanni Oradini. Despite the changeup, the Bulldogs won as the newly formed team of Cutura and Oradini would get the first result at 6-4, before No. 44 Braun and Foshey would clinch the doubles point at No. 1, 6-4.
Let alone it being freshman Oradini's first doubles victory as a Bulldog, it was also his first collegiate doubles match in the Maroon and White as he performed admirably for MSU on Friday.
"Gio did an amazing job stepping up for us today," Roberts said. "He was great in doubles and gave a tremendous effort in singles play. I'm proud of the way he is adapting to hard court and the college tennis atmosphere."
The doubles match for Borges and Rakic was suspended after the clinch, with the Bulldog duo leading 5-4.
In singles play the Bulldogs would take all but one first set as MSU jumped out to an early advantage. After taking his first set, 6-3, freshman Simon Baudry would put away his Hurricane foe, 6-0, to give MSU the 2-0 lead. Soon after, No. 3 Borges would show why he earned the No. 3 ranking earlier in the week as the sophomore won in straight-sets over Miami's No. 63 Piotr Lomacki, 6-1, 7-5.
With the match in full control at 3-0, the freshman Oradini would again provide a huge lift for the Bulldogs as he hammered Miami's Dane Dunlap, 6-0, in the first set. Oradini would be pushed in the next set to a tiebreaker, but the freshman wrestled the match away from Dunlap to win, 7-6(2) and clinch the 4-0 win for MSU.
The win improved MSU's record to 4-0 as the Bulldogs earned their fourth-consecutive victory away from Starkville. Miami, fell to 2-2 as the Hurricanes look to bounce back against Florida Atlantic on Sunday at home.
