2017 was an incredible year to be a Bulldog, featuring some of the greatest athletic and academic achievements our school has ever had. We set records, we made history, and together, we raised the bar for what it means to wear the Maroon and White, to be a part of the MSU family.
Personally, I am overwhelmingly humbled and thankful to be completing my first full calendar year as your Director of Athletics, and I can't thank all of you enough – collectively and individually – for your support of Mississippi State University. I can't wait to see what 2018 holds, but with that said, 2017 isn't over yet!
Speaking of great achievements in 2017, our football team has finished practices on campus and will be traveling next week to Jacksonville, Florida, to begin on-site preparation for the TaxSlayer Bowl on December 30. If you haven't yet purchased tickets, you can do so now by visiting www.hailstate.com/tickets and might I add, a trip to Florida in the middle of winter makes for an excellent Christmas gift.
For those who will be at the game, be sure and join us December 29 at 6:30 p.m. ET at the Jacksonville Landing for our official pep rally, featuring our spirit squads, the Famous Maroon Band, Bully and Jak. Immediately following that at Fionn MacCool's Irish Pub, also in the Landing, stick around for our bowl edition of DawgTalk presented by Farm Bureau, featuring the DawgTalk debut of new head coach Joe Moorhead. The show will air from 7-8 p.m. ET. Also, a reminder here that any and all bowl-related information can be found on our gameday page at www.hailstate.com/gameday.
I want to take a moment here to say how incredibly proud I am of every single one of our student-athletes at MSU. A single paragraph can't do them justice for their hard work and dedication that led to the highest collective GPA in MSU history. With an overall 3.16 among all scholarship student-athletes this fall semester, our young men and women exemplified what it means to be a Bulldog.
Our goal here at MSU is to develop those young people in their fields of play, in the classroom and in life, as they prepare themselves for careers beyond MSU. We are overwhelmingly excited for and proud of them for their achievements in the classroom this year.
With the non-conference portion of the season winding down, let's help finish it off with big crowds here in Starkville and down in Jackson this week for Coach Howland and our men's basketball team. We host the Little Rock Trojans tonight at 7 in The Hump, then on Saturday we travel down to Jackson to face Southern Miss in the Mississippi Coliseum at 6 p.m. I hope you'll make plans to join us for both.
Meanwhile, we wish Coach Schaefer and the ladies of our undefeated No. 3 women's basketball team good luck this week as they have arrived in Las Vegas for the Duel in the Desert. We play UNLV this afternoon at 4:30 and Syracuse on Thursday at 4:30, with both games able to be streamed at www.flohoops.com.
We appreciate what you do for Mississippi State Athletics and want to encourage you to get others involved. There are three things you can do to help the athletic department at Mississippi State reach its desired goals:
1. Buy Season Tickets
2. Financially Support the Bulldog Club
3. Get Others To Do The Same
Thanks for taking the time to read this update.
Hail State!
