STARKVILLE, Miss. – A star on the Alabama softball scene over the last three years, Anna Kate Segars will travel to the Magnolia State to continue her career on the diamond, becoming the sixth member of Mississippi State softball's 2018 signing class.
"Anna Kate is the definition of our core values: selfless, excellent and competitive," said head coach Vann Stuedeman. "She is driven to excel in all areas. Her select team coach, Slade Stewart of the Huntsville Sparks, and I go way back. He told me time and again that she is going to do whatever it takes to do the right thing and get that boat headed in the right direction. She will paddle faster, slower, take the lead or just stay the path. That is evident when you see her play. We are proud to add Anne Kate and her family to the Bulldog Family."
The Moulton, Ala., native has been a two-sport standout at East Lawrence High School and brings a powerful bat to the Maroon and White's lineup.
"I have always dreamed of playing in the Southeastern Conference," Segars said. "Mississippi State was a program that I have enjoyed watching and always wanted to play for. I wanted to attend a school that felt like a home environment. When I visited campus, it felt just like that. I had a special feeling that I had not felt anywhere else. I felt as if MSU is where I was supposed to be. It was certainly a place I wanted to be. I am very thankful for the opportunity that the coaching staff has given me to achieve a lifelong dream."
Softball is a family affair at East Lawrence as Anna Kate competes for her mother and head coach Marshela Segars. The three-time all-state outfielder/first baseman is just the second student-athlete from East Lawrence to ever sign with a Division I school.
Her career started in dominating fashion as Seagars tallied a .594 clip coupled with a .657 on-base percentage. She knocked a staggering 60 hits over her debut season, including nine homers. Her efforts earned Moulton Advertiser All-County and Decatur Daily First Team All-Area laurels. Segars was also selected to the All-Tennessee Valley Team and earned her first 4A First Team All-State selection.

The impressive stats rolled into her sophomore season as Segars held a .560 average at the plate and turned in a .633 on-base percentage. She repeated as a Decatur Daily First Team All-Area selection and earned her second 4A First Team All-State honor. Segars was also crowned the All-County Player of the Year by the Moulton Advertiser.
Last season, Segars put up a record-breaking performance for the Eagles. She held a .592 on-base percentage and added a .454 batting average. She flashed her sped on the base paths with 32 stolen bases as a junior. Segars set three state records over the 2017 season as she slugged 10 triples, scored 73 runs and drew 44 walks. Segars was once again selected as the All-County Player of the Year by the Moulton Advertiser and earned a First Team All-Area nod from the Decatur Daily. She also picked up her third straight First Team All-State accolade. Segars was selected to compete in the North-South All-Star Game along with fellow 2018 signee Jamie Gregg.
Segar has turned in an impressive travel ball career with coach Slade Stewart and the Alabama Sparks Elite 2000. She has led the Sparks to an 124-27 record during her tenure. The Spark turned in a top-10 performance at the 12U ASA Nationals, following up with a top-25 finish at the PGF Nationals 14U. The Sparks had their best national finish last season as they finished in the top five of the PGF National 16U tournament.
Segars has also earned six letters as a power forward for the East Lawrence basketball squad. She has earned all-county and all-area accolades for her presence on the court. Last season, Segars was honored as the Moulton Advertiser's Player of the Year after leading the Eagles to a Lawrence County Tournament Championship. Segars was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and received 3A All-State Second Team accolades.
In the classroom Segars is just as successful as she excels academically. She will graduate as a member of East Lawrence's Top 10 and is currently serving as the senior class president. Segars is also a member of the Beta Club.
The daughter of Chad and Marshela Segars, Anna Kate spends her time off the field volunteering with local youth softball and basketball leagues.
