STARKVILLE, Miss. - Stellar numbers in the circle combined with lethal abilities at the plate make Kayla Boseman a dual-threat addition to the Mississippi State softball program as she joins the Maroon and White as the third member of the 2018 signing class.
"We are eager for Kayla's arrival to Starkville," head coach Vann Stuedeman said. "Verbally committed since the ninth grade, she has been like part of the family away on an extended vacation. Now I know how her parents will feel when she finally comes to stay. She will provide depth in the circle as well as in the offensive lineup. She will definitely hit in more than she lets in."
Coming to Starkville via Ooltewah High School, Boseman currently ranks 39th in the 2018 class by FloSoftball and reached as high as 12th in the rankings.
"I chose Mississippi State because it is a family environment," Boseman said. "On my first visit, everyone made me feel welcomed. They were really excited to have me there. I saw something in the coaches that really got my attention. Not only are they good coaches, but they also have a good chemistry with their players. The coaches truly have the players' interests at heart. They look out for their players. When they say we are family, they mean it and embrace it. I also love the campus and the atmosphere."
Boseman has been a standout for the OHS Owls in her three years, already racking up a trio of All-District and Tennessee Sports Writers Association All-State Team honors and back-to-back selections (2015-16) as a Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year finalist.
In her freshman season, Boseman tallied a .531 average at the plate with 13 home runs and 68 RBIs, while going 22-4 with 241 strikeouts and a 1.46 ERA in the circle. She led the Owls to a 40-10 record and a third-place 3A finish. Boseman was named to the Regional Best of Preps First Team, 3A Miss East Tennessee Softball and earned national recognition as a MaxPrep Freshman All-American and MaxPrep National Freshman of the Year.
Boseman bested her freshman year stats with a staggering .589 average at the plate over her sophomore season. She also tallied 89 RBIs to average almost two RBIs per game and slugged 21 home runs and 17 doubles, landing her second consecutive All-District and All-State honors as the Owls finished 41-6. In the circle, she held a 2.04 ERA and a 19-4 record with 194 strikeouts over 137 innings of work. Her efforts earned her another national laurel as she was named a MaxPrep All-American, while also earning her second consecutive Regional Best of Preps First Team honor.
As a junior, Boseman turned in a 15-4 record in the circle with 184 strikeouts. At the plate, she knocked nine homers and tallied 39 RBIs, helping her to a .474 batting average. She earned All-District and All-State honors for the third straight season; and for the third time over her career, she named a nominee for Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year.
Her success on the diamond does not stop at OHS as Boseman has put together a dominating career on the travel ball scene. MSU's newest addition plays for coach Rocky Thompson and the AL Birmingham Thunderbolts Premier, joining fellow 2018 classmate Grace Fagan.
Boseman led the Thunderbolts to back-to-back, third-place finishes at the 2015 and 2016 PGF Championships. In 2015, she held a 0.79 ERA over her 35 innings of work with 19 strikeouts. She posted a 3-1 record en route to FloSoftball All-American honors. Over her 2017 travel season, she held a 2-1 record, tossing two shutouts to hold a .50 ERA.
The daughter of Robert and Felicia Boseman, Kayla is a member of the Beta Club. She plans to major in kinesiology at Mississippi State.
