It's appropriate that our final opportunity this football season to gather as a family at home is on Thanksgiving as we host the Egg Bowl tomorrow night. By working together, our gameday atmosphere has helped create an incredible home field advantage for Coach Mullen and the young men of our football team, and it is of the utmost importance that we give them that support from start to finish one more time this week. Your efforts have been noticed by others, as evidenced by this note from a first-time visitor who sent us this short message after attending our game against Alabama. From Richard Anslow, a native of New York: "This was my first SEC football game (my son is a student at MSU). I have been to numerous high profile Big 10 football games (The Horseshoe, Camp Randall). Nothing compares to my experience this past Saturday at Davis Wade Stadium."
It is thanks to you that people continue to speak so highly of their experiences at Mississippi State. We'll do it again this Thursday as we have a final sendoff for our 13 seniors just before kickoff. Additionally, I hope many of you will join me as we honor two Bulldog legends in Robert Bell and Frank Dowsing, the first African-American football players in MSU history. We will have a ceremony at 4 p.m. in the welcome plaza of the north end zone Thursday afternoon. For more information on these events as well as all times and schedules, make sure to visit www.hailstate.com/gameday.
And finally, as we approach an exciting rivalry game, I encourage you to remember to treat others with respect and dignity. Our rivalry is one of the great ones in college football, having been around for over 100 years. It was in the name of mutual respect within that rivalry that the trophy was created, so as we cheer on our Bulldogs, let's be sure to be as hospitable as we are passionate.
That said, let's go out there and make sure we keep the Golden Egg where it belongs.
On Egg Bowl Eve, we've got yet another big game in town. Coach Howland and our men's basketball team host Stephen F. Austin tonight at 7 p.m. and I'm looking forward to a big crowd against a tough opponent that has made regular appearances in the NCAA Tournament in recent years. As Coach Howland continues to build the program, it is imperative that we show the same support in The Hump as we've shown at Davis Wade for our football team. This year's team is young, talented and very exciting to watch, and tonight's game caps a stretch of three games in five days before they return to action again on Sunday at 2 p.m. against Jacksonville State in Starkville. Let's cheer them on as they look to continue their undefeated start to the year.
While the rest of us are in Starkville this week, we all wish our women's basketball team good luck this week as they have arrived in Cancun for the Cancun Challenge. Vic Schaefer has his team ranked No. 3 in the country and we'll be cheering them on from afar for all three games this weekend. They'll be back in Mississippi next Wednesday when we play the University of Louisiana-Lafayette in Jackson at the Mississippi Coliseum. If you haven't yet purchased tickets for that game, you can do so at www.hailstate.com/tickets.
Days like these are bittersweet for those of us who come to know and love the student-athletes at MSU, when we are forced to say goodbye to young men and women who have grown to mean so much to us. Our volleyball team hosts Texas A&M today at 3 p.m. in what will be the final home game for the small but impactful senior class. In moments like this, we extend our thanks and our appreciation to those who chose to be Bulldogs and joined the Mississippi State family. As we say to all when their careers here come to a close: wherever you go, we go with you.
We appreciate what you do for Mississippi State Athletics and want to encourage you to get others involved. There are three things you can do to help the athletic department at Mississippi State reach its desired goals:
1. Buy Season Tickets
2. Financially Support the Bulldog Club
3. Get Others To Do The Same
Thanks for taking the time to read this update.
Hail State!
