STARKVILLE, Miss. — Abdul Ado's first career double-double highlighted Mississippi State's 77-68 win against Green Bay Monday night at Humphrey Coliseum.
The Bulldogs led from start to finish while moving to 3-0 for the first time since the 2014-15 season.
"We beat a good team tonight," MSU coach Ben Howland said. "We had a solid lead, and they never gave up or quit. In the first half, we got off to a great start. Abdul was a force inside. It was unfortunate he got a second foul there so early in the half. Offensively and defensively, he was good.
"Lamar (Peters) had a good game. Of our 23 misses (from 3-point range), about 10 of those were open looks. It is hard to play two games in three days. It's early in the season and that can affect you early in the season."
Peters led the way with a season-high 18 points for the Bulldogs. Also in double figures were Aric Holman with 13 points, Ado with 12 points and Nick Weatherspoon with 10 points.
Ado had a team-high 11 rebounds to complete the double-double. Nick Weatherspoon has now scored in double figures in all three games for the Bulldogs.
"We were more aggressive toward the basket in the second half because the outside shots weren't falling," Peters said. "We had to make sure to get the ball inside for easy baskets. We are good enough to hit our outside shots. They just weren't falling tonight."
Ado capped an early 9-2 run for the Bulldogs with a basket in the lane. The lead was later stretched to 12 at 17-5 on a layup by Eli Wright with 14:16 left in the half. Peters then followed with a 3-point basket.
A layup by Peters ran the lead to 16 at 24-8 with 10:46 left in the half.
MSU's good offensive flow continued but Green Bay continued to battle as well.
An Aric Holman basket put the lead at 33-18 with 5:23 left in the half.
MSU shot 47.1 percent from the first half and led 40-32 at the break.
E.J. Datcher capped an 8-0 run for a 50-37 lead with 14:59 left in the game.
Still, the Bulldogs could not pull away.
The Phoenix was within four at 55-51. A layup by Nick Weatherspoon pushed the lead back to double digits at 65-55 with 6:47 left in the contest.
For the game, MSU hit 29 of 63 shots from the field (46.0 percent), 3 of 23 shots from 3-point range (13.0 percent) and 16 of 21 shots from the foul line (76.2 percent). Green Bay hit 21 of 54 shots from the field (38.9 percent), 9 of 24 shots from 3-point range (37.5 percent) and 17 of 24 shots from the foul line (70.8 percent).
MSU held a 39-36 rebounding advantage. The Bulldogs had 13 assists and 14 turnovers, while the Phoenix had 12 assists and 19 turnovers.
Green Bay (1-2) received 15 points each from Khalil Small and T.J. Parham. Kameron Hankerson was also in double figures with 10 points. Small had a team-high seven rebounds.
MSU will play host to Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
