Gameday: SEC West's Two Winningest Programs Since 2014 Clash Saturday Night
November 10, 2017 | Football
STARKVILLE, Miss. – The SEC West's two-winningest programs since 2014 face off at 6 p.m. CT Saturday as No. 16 Mississippi State hosts No. 2/1 Alabama in what is expected to be a raucous environment inside Davis Wade Stadium. For complete gameday information, visit HailState.com/gameday.
MSU (7-2, 3-2), bowl eligible for a school-record eighth straight season, is riding a four-game winning streak and sits in third place in the SEC Western Division standings. The Crimson Tide (9-0, 6-0) has not lost an SEC regular season game since 2015.
"We have to execute really well in all three phases," MSU head coach Dan Mullen said. "We have to tackle well one-on-one in the open field. We cannot give up big plays. Offensively, we have to play sound football and make plays and win 50-50 balls. We need to win the turnover battle. It's a big game and these are the games you work so hard for to play."
The Bulldogs have been best when they run the football effectively, averaging 259.3 yards per game on the ground, which is a program-best since 1980. The two-headed attack of quarterback Nick Fitzgerald and running back Aeris Williams has proven to be problematic for opposing teams. Fitzgerald has racked up four straight 100-yard rushing games, which is the longest streak by an SEC quarterback in at least 20 years. Williams has put up 86.2 rushing yards per game and been a force after contact.
Defensively, Todd Grantham's unit has forced eight turnovers during the four-game winning streak, including three straight games with a pick-six. They allow only 124 yards per game on the ground, while Alabama is tops in the league in rushing offense at 278.4, which is ninth nationally.
