STARKVILLE, Miss. – For the first time in program history, two members of the Mississippi State soccer team have earned Southeastern Conference weekly honors in the same week.
Brooke McKee and Catalina Perez earned Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week accolades, respectively, the conference office announced Monday. It was also just the second time in program history that multiple Bulldogs earned weekly conference honors in a season.
McKee earned SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors after scoring three of the Bulldogs' four goals this week. McKee had a knack for scoring on Thursday in Athens, netting a pair of goals in MSU's 3-0 victory at Georgia.
On Sunday against Ole Miss, McKee continued her scoring frenzy by scoring on a corner kick with a fade-away header that sailed just over the goalkeeper's reach for her eighth goal of the season. McKee's eight goals scored continues to build on her career-best season with the Bulldogs and has her tied for fourth in the league.
Perez was a stalwart in goal for the Bulldogs this past week, tallying 10 saves over the Bulldogs two matches en route to being tabbed the conference's Defensive Player of the Week.
On Thursday at Georgia, Perez notched her fifth clean sheet of the season and played a huge role in limiting Georgia's chances by coming off her line and organizing the Bulldogs' backs. She tallied four saves to keep UGA off the board, displaying her excellent athleticism on several occasions to knock shots away while also stopping potential Georgia chances.
In Sunday's tie against Ole Miss, the Boca Raton, Fla., native was again spectacular, hauling in six saves and preventing countless chances by again coming off her line and organizing MSU's defenders. Perez's career-best 55 saves thus far this season continues to build on her impressive senior campaign and ranks sixth in the league. Her 38 saves in conference play is even more impressive, ranking third among all SEC goalkeepers.
Perez's most recent award just adds to the long list of awards she has received. The Colombian National team member earned a similar honor in 2015 with Miami when she was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Next Up For MSU…
The Bulldogs will look to improve their standing for the Southeastern Conference tournament in their final regular-season match against nationally-ranked Texas A&M at 7 p.m. Admission to the match at the MSU Soccer Field is free and the match will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
