Gameday: Bulldogs, Kentucky Meet in Homecoming Saturday Showdown
October 20, 2017 | Football
STARKVILLE, Miss. – For the first time since 1999, a Southeastern Conference opponent visits Davis Wade Stadium for Homecoming as Mississippi State welcomes 5-1 Kentucky in a pivotal Saturday showdown at 3 p.m. CT on SEC Network. For complete gameday information, visit HailState.com/gameday.
State (4-2, 1-2 SEC) dominated BYU, 35-10, a week ago and is hosting its first SEC game since Sept. 16. The Bulldogs are currently in a tie for fifth in the SEC West standings and are looking to make a move with league games on the schedule in five of the next six weeks.
The Wildcats (5-1, 2-1) are nearly one play away from being undefeated. UK had two weeks to prep for State with an open date last Saturday. They sit alone in second place in the SEC Eastern Division race.
"We need our fans to give us that home-field advantage this week," MSU head coach Dan Mullen said. "We need every student at this University piling to get into this stadium because it is a big, big game. We need this place rocking Saturday."
Kentucky is 5-1 through six games for just the fifth time in the past 40 years. They have been superb at stopping the run, allowing only 97.2 yards per game. The Wildcats are also +8 in turnover margin, which is second in the SEC and seventh nationally.
State is putting up 261.7 yards per game on the ground and is 4-0 when getting over 250 rushing yards this season. The Bulldogs are eighth nationally in total defense (284.8), fourth in passing defense (155.0) and first in first down defense (72).
