Quick Start Propels Ole Miss Past Bulldogs

OXFORD, Miss. — A quick start carried the Ole Miss basketball team to an 88-61 victory against Mississippi State Tuesday night at The Pavilion.
MSU dropped its second-straight road game to fall to 13-8 overall and 4-5 in league play. Ole Miss ended its three-game homestand with a win to move to 13-9 and 4-5. The Rebels have defended the home court six straight seasons in the series.
Quinndary Weatherspoon and Lamar Peters each had 16 points to lead the Bulldogs. Mario Kegler and Aric Holman each had six rebounds.
"In the first 12 minutes of the game we were right there," MSU coach Ben Howland said. "Their run was fueled by quick shots and turnovers and not getting back on defense in transition. In the second half, we had a good run to get back into the game.
"Losing Lamar (Peters) down the stretch and not having I.J. (Ready) at all really hurt tonight."
In the opening half, the Rebels shot 52.6 percent from the field and built a 51-32 halftime lead. Ole Miss ended the first half on a 22-5 run.
Both teams played well early offensively. However, the Bulldogs never led.
A 7-0 run helped pushed the Rebels to a 16-9 advantage. Then down nine points, the Bulldogs were back within 29-28 after 3-point baskets from Weatherspoon and Kegler.
The Bulldogs would manage two field goals over the final 7:45 of the half.
MSU went the first eight minutes of the second half and tried to climb back into the contest. A 3-pointer by Holman had the Bulldogs with 14. A 3-pointer by Weatherspoon brought the Bulldogs within 64-54 with 10:39 left.
Ole Miss scored the game's next 12 points.
"Turnovers and transition defense really hurt us," Howland said. "We had some unforced turnovers there late in the first half when we were in the game. Giving up 51 points in a half is difficult."
For the contest, the Bulldogs hit 21 of 53 shots from the field (39.6 percent), 7 of 25 shots from 3-point range (28.0 percent) and 12 of 16 shots from the foul line (75.0 percent). The Rebels hit 30 of 68 shots from the field (44.1 percent), 6 of 23 shots from 3-point range (26.1 percent) and 22 of 25 shots from the foul line (88.0 percent).
Ole Miss held a 43-30 rebounding advantage. The Bulldogs had 12 assists and 19 turnovers, while the Rebels had 15 assists and eight turnovers.
Ole Miss received 18 points from Terence Davis, 17 points from Sebastian Saiz, 16 points from Deandre Burnett and 15 points from Rasheed Brooks. Saiz had his 15th double-double of the season as he also had a game-high 11 rebounds.
MSU returns to Humphrey Coliseum for a 2:30 p.m. Saturday matchup with Tennessee. The game will be available on the SEC Network.
