As I write you this week on my way home from Athletic Directors meetings in Dallas, it is another Homecoming we're looking forward to this weekend as our Bulldogs travel to Boston to play UMass in Gillette Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The trip is our first football game in the Northeast in 30 years, and it also marks a return home for Coach Mullen. What is particularly neat is the connection the area has not just to Coach Mullen, but to all of who called Starkville home while in school at MSU.
You can read the full story of the connections here, but in Coach Mullen's nearby hometown of Manchester, N.H., stands a statue of a fellow Manchester native – General John Stark, the Revolutionary War hero for whom Starkville is named. Who knew our Mississippi town had such a tie to New England?
To those Bulldogs who already live in the area and to the many more who will be traveling from afar, make sure to join the events hosted by our Alumni Association on Friday night and on Saturday before the game. More information is available here.
For those of you who will be watching from home, the game will be broadcast online on ESPN3, and a full list of TV affiliates carrying the game across the country is available here.
BULLDOGS MAKING MARK IN PROS
There is hardly a day that goes by in the professional athletic calendar that we don't have one of our own representing their school on the biggest stage of their respective sports, but it seems that lately there has been an even higher amount of moments where young men and women we cheered on at MSU are now performing at the highest level of their game.
Women's golf great Ally McDonald recently notched a top-30 finish at LPGA major event The Evian Championship, Dak Prescott won his first game for the Dallas Cowboys over the weekend while facing Preston Smith in Washington, Pernell McPhee was voted team captain of the Chicago Bears, and just last night, Hunter Renfroe was finally called up to the big leagues by the San Diego Padres, the 57th- Diamond Dawg to make it to the Majors.
Those are just five of many more who are currently representing Mississippi State across the country and across the world. We are incredibly proud of each of them and are thrilled to follow their journeys.
WRAPPING UP THIS WEEK'S EMAIL IN MAROON AND WHITE…
- Our soccer and volleyball teams are both out of town this weekend, but you can catch them in action on TV and online. Soccer plays at Ole Miss Thursday on the SEC Network, while volleyball's matches at Tennessee Friday and Kentucky Sunday are both online on SEC Network+.
- Our women's basketball team announced its SEC schedule yesterday with the full non-conference schedule coming soon.
- And for the third-straight week, our cross country team is ranked in the national polls.
We appreciate what you do for Mississippi State Athletics and want to encourage you to get others involved. There are three things you can do to help the athletic department at Mississippi State reach its desired goals –
1. Buy Season Tickets
2. Financially Support the Bulldog Club
3. Get Others To Do The Same
Thanks for taking the time to read this Update.
Hail State!
