STARKVILLE, Miss. - After qualifying for NCAA Regional play last season, Jessica Peng and Ji Eun Baik return to lead the Ginger Brown-Lemm's Mississippi State women's golf team into another campaign.
"This year will be an exciting year. The tournament schedule is tough, but we have played many of these courses in past years," Brown-Lemm, who enters her seventh season at the MSU helm, said. "We also have a very mature and seasoned senior class in Baik, Peng, and (Izel) Pieters. There are no juniors this season, but we are excited to have very strong sophomore and freshman classes. The competition to make the traveling five will be fierce."
The Bulldogs, who feature a pair of talented newcomers in Athena Yang and Teri Doss, open the 2016-17 season in Norman, Okla., at the Schooner Fall Classic, a tournament the Bulldogs have become very familiar with. MSU finished third last season with the best 36-hole total in school history (565). That stellar effort came a year the Bulldogs won behind former All-American Ally McDonald's course and school single-round record (63).
Moving into October, the team heads to Charleston, S.C., to compete in the Cougar Classic. Two weeks later State travels to North Carolina for the Greenville Regional Preview, a two-day tournament held at Ironwood Country Club. That event is one of two new tournaments that MSU will participate in this season.
MSU wraps the fall slate Oct. 24-25 when it heads to Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas, for the Alamo Invitational, an event Brown-Lemm's squad took seventh in a year ago.
The Bulldogs return for the spring slate Feb. 5-7, heading to Orlando for the UCF Challenge. After playing in New Orleans in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate (Feb. 19-21), the Bulldogs open March with back-to-back trips to South Carolina.
MSU plays in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate March 3-5, and returns to the Palmetto State March 31-April 2 to wrap the regular season in the Clemson Invitational.
This year's SEC Championship returns to Greystone Golf Club in Birmingham, Ala., April 21-23.
NCAA Regionals will be hosted at various sites May 8-10, while the NCAA Championship will take place May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
