May 25, 2016 | Softball, Athletic Academics
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Mississippi State Softball team sent a league-high number of student-athletes to academic all-SEC honors for the fifth time since 1997 and 10 or more athletes to such accolades for the fourth time in school history with the release of the 2006 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll Thursday afternoon by the league office in Birmingham, Ala.
A school record 14 MSU softball players earned league academic laurels in 2006, a number which includes 93 percent of the honor-roll eligible athletes on its current roster. The 2006 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2005 Summer, 2005 Fall and 2006 Spring terms. The SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll, which is expected to be released later this summer, could include the remainder of MSU's current softball student-athletes.
Each student-athlete must 1) have a GPA of 3.00 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship, a letter winner or have participated on a varsity team for two years if non-scholarship; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport's entire NCAA Championship segment.
Senior second baseman Callye Williams and junior pitcher Kelli Miller earned their third academic all-conference accolade and headlined a list of nine Bulldogs who have been decorated with the honor more than once. Stephanie Comeaux, Katie Cooley, Blair Geddings, Hayle Guess, Sara Hickerson and Katie Johnson all earned the laurel for the second time. Michelle Kinney earned her third league academic award, including a nod as a member of the MState track and field squad in 2004.
Sophomores Courtney Bures, Nakita Boyce, Lindsay Hunley and Allison Meyer, as well as redshirt freshman Gina McCloud, all earned the award for the first time after taking home SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll laurels in 2005.
In the sport of softball alone, Mississippi State stands unchallenged as the leader of academic all-SEC honorees since the sport's inception in 1997. The league has decorated an SEC-leading 105 MSU softball players with SEC Spring or Freshman Academic Honor Roll accolades in the nine seasons that any MSU player has been eligible for the award.
