Bures Earns Second Team NFCA All-South Region Laurels
May 25, 2016 | Softball
Bures joined 15 other Southeastern Conference players on the all-region squads and will now be eligible to receive all-American accolades for the second consecutive season. She was one of a pair of Bulldogs to earn all-region honors last season, while representing the league as the NFCA's first team all-American at shortstop. The 2006 NFCA All-American teams will be announced at a banquet prior to the NCAA Women's College World Series, June 1-7, in Oklahoma City, Okla.
When you look at our offensive statistics, she's the leader in about all areas, said Mississippi State head coach Jay Miller. Courtney hit third for us all year and she was the one that we counted on in terms of driving in runs. She was the big hitter for us in our lineup. I thought that she did an outstanding job there but, more importantly, the biggest improvement was on defense. She only made six errors all year and did a tremendous job for us on defense. I don't think there is a better defensive shortstop in the country.
Riding a wave of momentum created by herself as a rookie, Bures was just as impressive as a sophomore, maintaining a .346 (62-for-179) batting average to go along with 20 extra-base hits (5 HR), 37 RBI and 29 runs scored. Having turned in a slugging percentage of .547 and an on-base mark of .406, she was walked 15 times, was hit by pitch on five occasions and proved successful on 15 of 20 stolen base attempts. Bures struck out just 11 times in 179 at-bats * a ratio of one strikeout for every 16 at-bats.
Included in her numbers were a team-best 16 multiple-hit games and nine multiple-RBI outings, as well as six game-winning RBI. She put together hitting streaks of six or more games on four occasions, including an 11-game skein from March 19 to April 1.
Bures, as well as former Mississippi State all-Americans Kellie Wilkerson (1998-01) and Iyhia McMichael (2001-04) will represent the Maroon and White when the trio travels to Chula Vista, Calif., June 9-11, for the USA Softball World University Games Selection Camp. Following that stint, Bures will join current teammate Hayle Guess in Stratford, Conn., as the duo will compete with the Stratford Brakettes women's softball team throughout the summer months.
